Starting to have problem shifting from forward to reverse realy stiff sometimes with a bump before engaging I was told to make sure gear oil level is good

What kind of boat is it? More importantly what drive is it, OMC, Mercruiser?

Probably more of a cable adjustment issue or a sticky cable rather than gear oil level.

1987 Sunrunner220 Volvo Penta this may be the result of hitting floating tree log that broke my propeller blade just to give you an idea

if impact actually broke your prop, then a bent prop shaft and damage to the outdrive is likely..

After replacing propeller blades ran true no vibration going across lake just when docking chaging direction is when shift would no engage without a thump myhave to get serviced Thanks

which volvo drive? the AQ series use a cone clutch. if your low on fluid, it can cause symptoms you describe.
