Re: outdrive question

I think that's a GM hei distributor. They started using that on GM cars around 1974.

Re: outdrive question

The distributor is NOT marine, neither is the carb from what I can see. The fuel filter shouldn't be in that line, the fuel pump is probably automotive as there is no leak hose to the carb. No way to tell about starter and alternator by looking at them, but would assume they are automotive also.
The exhaust is almost a sure bet for getting water into the cylinders.

Re: outdrive question

This is the transom, the exhaust has flappers on it. Where would be a good place to look for the alt, dist, carb, and whatever else you guys think I need?

Yeah. The HEI dist, non-marine Holley Carb, and 12si automotive alternator do not appear to be Marine parts. I'll bet the starter is not an SAE 1171 starter either.

If you have thru-hull exhaust, those manifolds might work.....

You'll need the correct (marine) starter, dist, alt, coil, AND exhaust manifolds/risers(probably if you want thru prop exhaust)

If that's a car/hot-rod engine the camshaft may cause reversion....OTOH, If it was a truck engine the camshaft might be ok. If it doesn't have brass core-plugs and you run it in salt water you might rust thru them (and the waterpump) quickly.

There's really nothing wrong with using a 283/305/327/350 engine as long as you "cam" it right and use the right accessories.

Let me also add that it appears that you also have an engine mounted fuel pump. There should be no plastic type inline fuel filter and because I see no clear hose from the pump to the flame-arrester, it's probably NOT a marine type fuel pump either..... (also designed to not dump fuel into the bilge and blow you up!!) The hose should be there to route fuel (from a leaking diaphrapm) to the top of the carb and into the engine instead of into the bilge.......

Re: outdrive question

Hey guys, got all my parts now, even found a rebuilt edlebrock at the local boat shop for 150.00. Next questions are, what RPM should I be looking for, and what prop should be on it. Right now it has an aluminum on it with the #'s 48-78120 19. It came with a SS prop also, but not sure of size, its covered, and dont feel like opening it up. Any idea on the speed I can expect?? I now there are alot of variables here but just a ball park.

Ayuh,... You should prop it so the motor runs at 4400/ 4800rpms at Wot....
Whatever prop yeilds those rpms is the Right prop...
I'd expect to see yer speeds in the low to mid-40s mph...

Re: outdrive question

Well guys, I got all my parts on, edlebrock 1409, Referb alt, new starter, and I went with a holley elec fuel pump. Fired it up the first time today, took a little prime, but fired and sounded great. Holding 70 on the oil, definatly has a nice cam, not wild, but you can hear it(nice lope) Thanks for all your help. I was worried about how loud the exhaust would be, but it wasnt near what I thought it would be, but in MN the level is 84db's, I guess we'll see. Again thanks for the help. (Bond-O)
