I recently installed a 290 dp on my boat. First time out I used 30 wt moto oil for lube. After doing some reading I found that I am supposed to use 80/90 wt gear lube. I changed to amsoil marine. Went out today and after running wot 4600rpm fo15 min. The motor acted wanted to lug. I shut it down and checked drive. The props were quite hard to spin. After a while of sitting every thing worked ok
brought home and put on muffs and ran. Everything was fine. But the drive got really hot to touch and hard to spin
do I go back to 30wt. Or is there something else going on here?

Volvo has never used engine oil in a DP drive of any king.
So far you have used engine oil and "wonder oil" but not what is recommended
I would suggest you drain the oil and examine the magnet and check the oil. Is it burned black????? Metal on the magnet?

No, not hurry. Most if not all of the single prop volvo older drives use motor oil in the outdrive unlike their mercrusier cousins.

Pulled the drain plug tonight and the oil looked fine. Nice and golden. Ill drop tomorrow and go see if I can find some volvo gl-5.

Maybe a drive shower would help- with whatever oil you use.

Fill procedure: I dropped the oil out of the drive using the drain plug. To fill, I took out the dip stick on top, then used the filling plug under the back plate. filled with 2.5 quarts, and checked level. Filled little by little till the fluid was on the full line of the dip stick(not screwed in)

Update, I took the outdrive off today and checked the ujoints and they felt fine. I played with the forward and reverse on the drive and everything is smooth as silk.
Going to replace fluid with volvo lube.
Then it is off to the lake to take for another test drive in water and see how things work before I tear into the drive.

Fun fun fun.
