Re: outdrive paint

I would have the unit bead blasted, then primer, then skim coat of filler, then sand, then prime again, then paint.

As others have said hit it with a good etching primer, I used some in a spray can fromAuto Zone, I believer it was Duplicolor and it worked really well, replace your anode and get those wires hooked back up.

Interlux makes Primocon which is also an etching primer they sell for this specific purpose. Available in both cans and spray cans.

cool we have a consensus then, the zink chromate is getting the nods i'll stop by west marine later todaye there i'll pick up the new annodes for the season, even tho that lower was only in the water for a month and a half it's a lil beat up, it will be replaced.
are the annodes year specific? or just model specific for the alpha one gen 1

Those casting are pretty thick so unless you are taking off an 1/8'' everywhere I wouldn't worry about sanding it, you need to get it off and make sure you get everywhere, I think the original pics made it look worse than it really was.

no it was really that bad,
onward then, give me that sander i'm ready to proceed see you all later today
thanks again for all the help and advice

That broken piece will not hurt anything. Didn't you get that outdrive at the end of last season ?
Why didn't the guy who installed it attach the ground wires and the anodes ?
What kind of condition is the gimble ring in ?

Re: outdrive paint

thanks again thalasso,
even tho i have had a boat since i was 16 they were all outboards and mostly runabouts this is my first i/o
yep the clutchdog went out in september in the original drive (current upper) no ground wires were attatched before or after the newer( current lower ),, outdrive was installed, and the wires were tucked nicely away outa sight i didn't know they were even supposed to be there:facepalm: that outdrive purchased had the wrong gears( again i was told they were the 1.5's) again i know better now,, stamped on the case again:facepalm:

seller of 2nd drive is not helping, even tho it was guarenteed(private seller)
the guy who i purchased the boat from helped me out some ( when the engine starter etc... ate it) that speaks highly of his integrety and was greatly appretiated especially with all the repairs that are almost finished. yay.

anyway the gimbal ring is in the same condition as the upper drive that i just finished painting, heavily pitted. but i got some better tools and dont think i'll have too much issue gettin her in a little better health:D if i do bellows it will make it easier with the ring off to get it done quickly, still waiten for the word on them bellows. on my thread when i installed the underwaters there is a close up of the nasties on the gimbal ring.

truth be told i have been tackiling a ton of tasks with our boat buddies here at Iboats keepin me from doin the wrong things
cheers to all,
see you on the water:D
