They sell the Mercury Marine rattle cans at every marine store I've ever been at.

If it's a Mercruiser, the Rustoleum is a much better paint than the Merc stuff. Black is black, no matching required.

I used the Rustoleum right over the paint already there and looks nice. You even have a choice of a gloss black or a flat black.

Re: outdrive paint

Do you have to use an etching/zinc oxide primer if the aluminum is exposed?

You have to use Zinc Chromate If you use sandpaper, you need to use aluminum oxide paper. No wire brushes.

Humm, you still have to use Zinc Chromate Primer on any exposed aluminum and I use wet/dry paper it's Aluminum Oxide and better when sanding metals and paint. To remove heavy corrosion or oxidation, use a stainless steel wire brush. You'll find them at Home Depot in the tools department by the welding stuff. Moeller sells the Zinc Chromate and what I think is a better paint then QuickSilver or Rustoleum. West Marine stocks the Moeller paints. The Moeller paint stays soft for about a month but you can put it in the water the next day and not hurt it, just don't scrub on it or wax it.

Re: outdrive paint

I used trem clad paint on my out board and it lasted three years and counting.
Remember the temperature has to be over 70 degrees for opt results.

Re: outdrive paint

Just painted mine this winter and used a rattle can and then hit it with automotive clear, it holds up really well, I resealed my lower and kinda tore up the paint so I redid it but it had been 3 years before that and it still looked fresh.

The key is prep, make sure you get the old paint scuffed up good so the new paint sticks, 320-400 wet shoudl work nicely.

Re: outdrive paint

Hard to tell...is that hard water deposits or corrosion?

On my old pre-alpha, which had hard water build up that looked about like your picture, a little muriatic acid cleaned it up FAST. You gotta be careful where you spray the stuff, though, as it is CORROSIVE x10 and will make stainless rust, eat concrete, etc. And the fumes are pretty nasty, too.

That may be a big no-no, and if it is someone will be along shortly to chastise me. It worked well for me, though, although I didn't have much aluminum exposed. The Mercruiser paint underneath was still in real good shape, with the exception of where I gouged it in my earlier attempt to scrape the deposits off.

What that looks like is your out drive has been exposed to electrolysis. The paint is peeling off and exposing the metel. This can happen a couple of ways #1 is when you over protect the metal. #2 is from stray current. Do you have aluminum or stainless prop? You can sand it and then primer with Zinc Chromate and paint.Google outdrive electrolysis. You will get some good reading material. Clean up the wiring in the bilge so there is none subjected to water

Thalasso thanks ,
you are right on there electrolosis, not sure if its the ground, but the lil stainless cables in the drive were not attatched to the boat, they were just hangin and the annode under the anti cavitation plate was missing along with chunks of the plate itself. the wireing in the bilge will be cleaned up before the motor gets put back in, however the starter wire runs thru the center of the bilge.

Ayuh,.... Don't do that.... You'll be thinning the case....

Looking better already. Don't forget the zinc chromate.

Re: outdrive paint

thanks all,
tomorrow around noon i will be moving forward. i guess i'll work on the other 1/2 and give everyone a chance to chime in before i sand too deep on the first side

You will be just fine. Hope you didn't use a wire brush. (steel)
glad to have ya here,
no wire brush! 80 grit sandpaper and a long time sanding lol. do you think i should stop there or get all the pits out? last thing i want is to go too far, and the other side of that would be not going far enough and give the electrolosis and easy hit on the case.
not sure where to go from here, i guess my plan for tomorrow is to get the other 1/2 at least at the same smoothness. whadya think?

Looking better already. Don't forget the zinc chromate.

so i should look for that specifically or is the zink rich primer gonna be ok?

Ayuh,.... Don't do that.... You'll be thinning the case....

my worry here Bond-o is if i dont get rid of it the case is doomed. i guess if i sand too much and thin the case it's inevitable asswell
whats your advice going forward

again thanks all in advance for the replies

Re: outdrive paint

Those casting are pretty thick so unless you are taking off an 1/8'' everywhere I wouldn't worry about sanding it, you need to get it off and make sure you get everywhere, I think the original pics made it look worse than it really was.

As others have said hit it with a good etching primer, I used some in a spray can fromAuto Zone, I believer it was Duplicolor and it worked really well, replace your anode and get those wires hooked back up.
