Hello,
I'm a bit of a new boater so please bear with me if this is a stupid question.
I've got a 1988 Four Winns 160 Freedom with a OMC Cobra 3.0. its running fine, but the last time I took it out I hit a stump or something. I was only cruising at about 1000 RPM's or about 7 to 10 MPH, but It bent the prop up pretty bad though everything else seemed ok. Until I got it out of the water. As I was pulling it out of the water I noticed the bilge pump was pumping out a bunch of water. It's never done that before. So I look all over under the boat and didn't see any damage to the hull at all. I got the prop fixed and took it back to the lake last weekend.
As we launched it, within 5 minutes, the pump came on again. We shut the motor off so I could get the motor cover off to see where the water was coming from and found that there was a pretty good amount of water coming in from the bottom of the mount on the transome. After closer inspection it was coming out right at the very bottom underneath or thru a brass colored plate.
We pulled it out of the water and I looked at the transom and the mounts on the inside and outside of the boat and don't see any damage at all on the transome or mount. I tapped all around the mounting plates and it all seemed extremely solid, and I don't see any cracks in the gel coat around it.
After talking to some friends who have boats they said there was a seal on the outside of the boat between the transome and mounts for the outdrive. Could that seal have been broken when I hit what ever I hit? If so, how much should I expect to spend to get it replaced?
With me being new to boating I'm afraid of getting ripped of by these boat shops. I've heard horror stories of newbie boaters like me getting taken advantage of.
