Re: Outdrive Leak

Not good.....:(
Your u joint bellows has water in it......
Not good....
You will need to remove the drive, drain it & have it pressure tested....
You will most likely need new u joints & a new gimbal bearing as well as new bellows.....
Post a pic of the drive when you have it off, as well as the bell housing for a better assessment....;)

Re: Outdrive Leak

Me and by brother got down there and looked. Someone (not us) took the boot thingy off and did not re tighten the Hose clamp!!! Water was coming right in there and it still had some in it!! I guess I should check all the other ones. I think the previous owner had worked on it before, did not have iboat Forums ;)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction otherwise I would have never even thought to look at that clamp.

I will let you know if that fixes it. I am pretty sure that is it.

I would pull the drive. Now that you found the water source you have to check and grease your gimbal bearing and u joints. You also need to pressure check your drive because the water ( causing rust ) will destroy your input drive shaft seal.

Re: Outdrive Leak

Okay we removed the drive unit. After very close inspection and sticking our air blower in into the hole I found that the bellow for the shaft had two holes in it. CRAP!

Oh well. We pulled the drive unit off.

Here are some pics of the inside.

looks like it has been getting water in it for some time. I bought this boat from someone so I am not surprised its a mixed bag of issues. No fear! I have air tools and a 3 helpers :) plus you guys.

My question that I have is I see the place for a O ring where the water pump sends it up. The rest is metal on metal. I am talking about the part where you can see the end of the shift cable. Where I took that pic. How does water stay out of the bellow area when its metal on metal like that?

Re: Outdrive Leak

A: There is a large rubber o ring that fits into the bell housing & sits on the 'shelf'....
When you get a new gasket set, you will see where it fits.....
There is a gasket that goes between the mating surfaces of the drive & bell housing as well......
You definately will need a new gimbal bearing & ujoints from the look of that.....
You will need to drain your drive & look for signs of water intrusion....
At the least, I would guess that you need a new yoke/yoke seal...
If you are lucky, there won't be any signs of water....
If there is, you have a whole 'nother can of worms....
Of course, that bellows needs replacing, & I would replace the lower shift cable as well.....
You have your work cut out for you.....:(
