I think the keys to doing this job:
Drive jack to get the drive at the right height
Proper alignment and lining up gimble bearing with the tool as mentioned
A means of turning the driveshaft just enough to make the splines line up. You’re talking like maybe 1/8–1/16” here...
That’s whats consistently worked for me....

I have a 1995 bayliner 1952 model cuddy with a 4 cylinder 3 liter .Alpha 1 Gen 2
Gear In forward, outer shoe ball finger in shift mechanizmem on right. drive shaft locked to left and the shifter foot is aligned in the straight forward position.

I have rebuilt with new oem parts the bellows etc at the back end of the boat. I am now trying to install the outdrive .. as I do so it "stalls" at the 1 and 1/2 inch mark and does not seem to want to go in any further. ( Fat new O Ring?) I have searched and read you need more persuasion to get the outdrive in but before that, is there any other trick I can use to make it go inside? While looking down , the u joint closest to the outdrive as u look back to front is in the [_] position with the next u joint vertical ||.

failing all else What is a good persuasive tool that won't break the outdrive ? MMMany thanks

MyLord, I have the EXACT same problem....Same picture...it seems my out drive is hanging on the metal bracket securing the u-joint bellows. I'm 99 percent sure the splines are at least several inches inside the engine. I don't understand how the drive can go in so easy THEN out of nowhere just hangs up 1 1/2 inches. SO FRUSTRATED. NEED HELP TOO!!!!!!

Yup just did the pull and reset of the outdrive and it was no problem .. guess its ok ,, oh yes replaced the gasket too :) the o rings must have been squished enough to let the shaft thru easy .... I gently tapped the outdrive thru with a wood block and hammer the 1st time ...if you measure the spline long shaft on the outdrive the first o ring was at 1 .5 inches

Watch my video. It deals specifically with that hang up point.
Goodness me, achris you make it look soooo easy. I've had my drive off many times and had the same problems turning the prop to make it fit but the tip about oil on the O rings is priceless. Just about to watch your other vids. Thank you.

Well yes experience is the thing that makes all the difference. I used to have trouble about half the time even though I got everything else lined up well, when I started using the long thin screwdriver in the u joints to turn the driveshaft, that's when my difficulties with getting it back on, seemed to end.

Seems like every second or third time I'm reinstalling the drive it wants to fight me. That's what happened a couple of nights ago. The darn thing just didn't want to go on. After much sweating and huffing and puffing, and saying many bad words, I got the thing on.

Only after I had torqued down the bolts and reattached trim rams did I see the big paper gasket sitting on the sunpad at the back of the boat. I forgot the gasket!

I got extra practice installing the drive this year...
