I have a 1974 Johnson outboard. Wanted to know how much the boat itself weighs without the engine. I already know how much the engine itself weighs. This is so i can know what kind of hitch to use.

Welcome aboard.

Read what you just wrote and ask again. How much does a boat weigh if a train leaves NYC and another train leaves Los Ang...........Nevermind.

What boat and trailer?

Without knowing what boat the best answer I can give you is the following:

Take the boat, trailer, and motor to a public scale and weigh it. Now subtract off the weight of the trailer (it's tagged somewhere as to its weight) and the weight of the outboard and the result is the rough weight of just the boat. **This assumes you have no gas, life jackets, anchors, etc stored in the boat - subtract this as well as needed.

:welcome:

Are you trying to trick us with a math problem?

Your boat weight = (the weight of the boat and the motor) - (the weight of the motor)

OK I gotta ask as inquiring minds want to know...

You say you want to know how much your boat weighs to get the proper hitch to tow correct? You then mention you have a 1974 Johnson outboard to which you know the weight correct? But for some odd reason that information isn't made available to us and neither is the make/model/year of your boat.

Yet to determine the overall weight you're going to tow it to a public scale. So how do you know which hitch to use??

Just curious as it seems like the cart is being put before the horse here. Too light weight of a hitch and you're asking for trouble towing the rig to a scale.

Thank you so much for replies. I suppose ill just have to take it to a scale.

What kind of boat is it?

What kind and model of a trailer is it?

If we know that we can figure the rough weight of the boat out as those are published numbers around the internet.

I'm about to eat a chef's salad. I know there are zero net calories in the celery.
How many calories are in the rest of the salad?

OK -- I can't resist this. Opening day of our county fair I ordered some food from one of the food vendors. The tab was $4.00. I presented a $10.00 bill to the attendant (guessing 16 years old or so since you need to be 16 to work the fair). Her face turned white and the "OMG" expression began to show. Someone outside the booth replied $6.00 and she then turned to another adult at the back of the booth who also said $6.00. She then turned to the cash box where she paused again to determine what bills to give me. I have commented before on the inability of our young people to grasp even simple daily life concepts. One in particular I commented on was a high school senior who did not know how to use a ruler. You cannot lay blame totally on the young people but you can pile on the blame to the education system teaching this common core crap.

The blame lies with the parents, and the parents alone.

First of all, the teachers are bound to teach what is presented to them. Its the bureaucrats that sit in the school board offices that decide what crap is to be taught. WE are the ones who elected these idiots, mostly because we didn't take the time to find out what was really going on. Furthermore, any parent worth his salt teaches their children in the home the life skills they need to survive.

Off soapbox now.....For an outboard, most will require a class 2 or smaller. That will get him to the scale. Orrrrrrr, googling the specifics and/or providing a picture will get us to do the work for him.

Leaning political, Guys.

Please don't go that way. Thanks.

Jboatman If you have to get a hitch and you need the weight of the the boat to get the right one, how are you going to take it to the scale when you don't have a hitch?

What boat do you have? If you tell us, we can get within a weight range to help you choose the right hitch.

These are classic examples of failure to understand basic concepts and is not a political discussion. We cannot help if we cannot get a person to provide details about his/her issue.

A strong Cat 300 will do fine if you have more gears.
