outboard motors cooling system

I'm buying a used Johnson O/B 1978 50hp. When we ran the engine there was no stream of water coming out of the top part of the engine that gives the operator the indication that the cooling system is working and not restricted in any way. The dealer stated that some outboards don't have that feature. The engine block felt cool but we only ran it only for a short period. I always though all outboards had that water stream coming out to show that the cooling system was working properly? ANY IDEARS?

Re: outboard motors cooling system

All motors have a telltail, even if it's just a "spray" out of the exaust. Some motors dont have a dedicated telltail, but it will show somewhere above the waterline.
I used to have a 65Jonnyrude on a Stamas, and it came outta the exaust ports.
The biggie is the temp of the heads, like you stated....That's the best indicator of all.
Also,most motors have a thermostat,and they
have a tendency to stick closed.

------------------
Time to change my tagline
