Outboard engine problem

I have a Glastron v156 with a Evinrude motor that I'm having a problem with. The motor will start and idle with no problems but as soon as you give it gas to go it shots off. Before shoting off it seams like it goes into gear a little too rough. I changed the gas filter and checked for any leaks. I told one of my friends about the problem and he asked me if I had already checked the vacum lines if it had any. Well, I couldn't answer his Q because I could not find any kind of vacum system on this motor. So I don't even know if it has a vacum system. Well hope this is enough info for someone to help me with this problem. By the way this is the first time I get on this forums. So lets put it to the test ;) Thanx

Re: Outboard engine problem

Sorry it took me so long to answer. It is a 1973 with a electric starter. As far as for the HP I'm not sure. I tried looking at the label on the motor but its too faded for me to be able to read anything of it. If it helps, I turned the rpms a litle bit higher to test it at the lake but no luck. Before I went to the lake I tested it at my house with a hose pluged in on the motor and water running, and it worked perfectly fine. I was able to go full throtle with no problem. But the motor stalls when you put the boat in the lake. It seems to me that the clutch kicks in to fast or something for that nature.

Re: Outboard engine problem

at home on the hose it is not under a load and will seem to run fine even if all of the cylinders are not firing. On the water it is under a load and it makes a difference. There should be a stamped plate on the transom bracket with a model number. That will tell us what we need to know. You could have one of several issues. One of more cylinders may not be firing. One or more carbs may be clogged. Without knowing what motor you have it makes it hard to give advice.

I will research some more on this motor and hopefully I will be able to get you more info so you can help me out.

check for spark at every cylinder. check compression on each. If you have spark and compression then that leaves the carbs. It is probably dropping a cylinder. check those and get back with us.

One more thing. How much compression should this motors have?

not so much as how much, but that they are within 10% off each other. If it is a compression problem causing one cylinder to not fire you will find something like 80-100 on all maybe then 30 lbs or something like it on the bad one. The point is the bad one will be real low and way off the others.
