Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

Did you go down towards the rt 50 bridge and the inlet or sinepatuxent bay at all? Did the place you stayed have a community ramp, or did you have to hunt around for one? Those are great pics. I'm hoping to take a 17' Celebrity down to OC when the drivetrain is done. OC is great.:)

Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

We just mainly took little rides in the Assawoman Bay near where we stayed which was on 123rd. I didn't even go much further south than the Rt. 90 bridge. Next year, with my new boat, I hope to go further. There's a restaurant on the bay called Fish Tales on 22nd st with dockage that I'd love to take the boat down to.

We used the boat ramp at 80th street. Very nice ramp but the approach is horrible. It's basically just a side street with a ramp at the end of it. I can't imagine what the procedure would be if there were a couple of people waiting to use it. And you pay $10 for the privilege. The OC municipal parking lot at 100th st. was a really nice set-up for storing the trailer.

This thread being dug up reminded me to look into our reservations for next year. Apparently the dates haven't been posted yet for 2010 but should be soon. Hopefully we can get the same place because we loved it.

When are you planning on going, maybe we'll go down the same time.
I love Fish Tales! My wife's old boss has his fishing boat there, he does charters.

Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

I spent a week in Chincoteague VA over Labor Day from Wednesday to Tuesday. And being unsure of my new surroundings I stayed local for a couple of days. But on Saturday (I forgot what day it was) we took the hour run up to OCMD. It was beautiful, saw some horses on Assateague Island on the way up. But once we hit OC it was chaos, boats achored in the middle of the channel, people zipping across in front of you, and forget about a no wake zone. We saw a jet skier run down by a 32' Grady White right at the route 50 bridge. The jet skier bounced of his port quarter and somehow managed to stay upright (very lucky). I know we are spoiled by the upper chesapeake, but that traffic was crazy. Maybe further north, away from the bridges would be nice, but stay away from the inlet.

So the back bay ride down to Chincoteague is OK and deep enough? I was looking at the map and wasn't sure if it could be done. Does it open up and allow for more open cruising in the Chincoteague Bay and Sinepuxent Bays or is that area also real shallow with sand bars all over? I love ocean city and had my old 21' Checkmate there once and loved the back bay area and all the resturants. The family really loved pulling up to Secrets Rest. and bar. Since I can't tow (no tow vehicle for now) I'm torn between keeping my boat in OC or on the upper Chesapeake, can't decide :-( We spend equal amounts of time in both places in the summer. Maybe it's time for a second boat, LOL.

I have no clue about Chincoteague. I probably wouldn't ever go that far. What other restaurants can you boat to? I know of Harpoon Hanna's, Fish Tales, and now Seacrets. Anything else?

You should definitely get a second boat :)

Well I'm jealous, I was down in OC in June laying out on a raft at secrets enjoying a beer when I saw an old probably 60 wooden boat pull up. Made me wish I had my 64 crestliner down there with me! Maybe next summer!

It was my first trip there, and after bending 2 props earlier in the year I'm alittle more cautious. I saw other 20 somethings running outside the channel (ICW), but the charts looked shallow. I know there are marinas on the mainland side so there must be some deep spots.

Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

I found this thread while looking for boating information about the bays in OC MD. I am a new boat owner and am greatly looking forward to an upcoming vacation in a few weeks. My wife, daughter and I were invited to go camping (in a 40 foot class A motor home) with my folks. We have done the trip before but this is a first with a boat. I know my dad is stoked about getting out on the water to fish. I am thinking about launching from the ramp just before you cross over the bridge to get on Assateaque Island. I know the water can be pretty shallow but I am running a 12.5' inflatable with an 18 hp short shaft motor so I am pretty confident we wont have any draft issues.
Does anyone know of any other good launch ramps in the area North of the route 50 bridge? I would like to do some cruising north of 50 and the way storms can pop up around there not being too far from the launch can be a good thing. I am launching from a trailer so I will need a place with ample parking as well.
Thanks in advance of any suggestions!

You can launch at Indian River which is well above Fenwick Island. Also there is a ramp in west Ocean city at the commercial fishing harbor and I think it is free to launch and there is a parking lot. This will bring you out right behind the inlet.

they had a ramp at Harpoon Hanna's on 54 just as you cross over the inlet into OC from Fenwick island. I think they have one at the marina in Ocean Pines, just off 90 before the bridge.

Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

I left it in the water in a slip. I hosed everything off and ran the motor on muffs for a while when I got home.

Hey EZ, glad you had such a good time. I spent my first summer in OC in 1984 and ended up living there for 3 1/2 years!!!:D

Kinda funny, I see your boat in your avatar all the time, and now in the pics you've posted. I've never thought of your boat as old. My Chaparral is almost twenty, and I've never thought of her as old either.;)

My boat recently tasted salt water for the first time in St Augustine. She's got raw water cooling. I coudn't afford a closed cooling system, so I picked up a Volvo Penta Neutra-Salt system after a lot of research. Works like a charm and didn't take much time at all to install. I still put her in fresh water when I got home and gave her a thorough flush.

That kicker you've got is a great little peice of peace of mind.:) I'd love to be able to put a kicker on mine; but I'd have to cut open the integrated swim platform to brace it. That's not going to happen.:( Anyway, again, Glad you had such a good time. You brought back a lot of really good memories for me. Thanks!!!

I don't even own the same boat! :p

Last year I took my newer boat (still old) and also had a great time with it. For this year, we've rented an even nicer place right on the bay (not a canal). Can't wait!!!!

Re: Our Ocean City, MD trip

Tried to reply this morning; but my satellite internet pooped out as it has been since I've been back from St Augustine.

Do you get out to Assategue at all? There are fantastic brown mussels in the grass beds... MMMmmmmmmm!!! The shells are almost like a triangle, flat and angular on the opening end, and they have ridges. I used to call them brown, toothed mussels. You'll see what I mean if you get some. Best mussels I've ever tasted. I used to eat them all the time.

Have a great time!!!

Fish Tales is probably my favorite place on the island.

I used to run the Water Park on the pier, if any of you remember it. It's been gone for years now sadly (parts of it were moved to Splash Mountain at Jolly Roger).

Glad you had fun!

I used to work games on the pier back in the late 80's!
