Re: ouch this hurts. boat launch
Been there, done that.
About all you can do it take it as easy as you can. Range of motion is important in keeping muscles from totally locking up. The spasm tends to reduce blood flow to the area which impedes healing.
Sometimes sitting for long also causes spasms, you GOT TO get up and move. Carefully, limit bending and twisting to what you are comfortable with. That old 'No pain, no gain' isn't for us, it just hurts.
Within reason, the more you can withstand the better and quicker you will heal as even slow movement promotes blood flow throughout the effected muscles.
Ice packs will reduce pain, but they also reduce blood flow. If the pain is so much then by all means, use the ice. Ice for the first 24 hours after injury can seriously reduce swelling, after that first 24 hours use hot packs or showers to promote more blood flow so necessary nutrients for healing can get to the injured muscles. Setting the showerhead on pulse can sometimes be magic.
Do NOT exert these muscles any more than simple range of motion movements. No lifting carrying, or any other activity out of your comfort range.
If your stomach can handle it NSAID, like ????? word escapes me, the active med in Motrin, helps relieve swelling and pain. Acetaminophen can help with the pain. Stay well hydrated, aspirin can thin the blood to help circulate within tense muscles.
It is going to take time.
