Re: other shark info...

Well there's no shortage of sharks around here that's for sure. Everytime we go out we seem to catch a decent sized shark or two. They are great eating too if prepared correctly. We keep them all the time. QUOTE]

What do you mean by prepare them correctly? what is it you do? I heard you pretty much have to gut them right away and put them on ice...anything else and then how to you "fillet" them and cook them?

I caught a nice 3 1/2 foot black tip last weekend and of course gutted it while it was still on the hook and then threw him on ice in the cooler. I had a link for cleaning them and it said a key point most overlook is that there is a bloody layer under the skin that will spoil the meat that has to be cut away. I cut down the backbone to seperate the filets, then I cut just deep enough to get the skin and red layer off from the other side, then following a tip from a coworker I soaked it in milk in a bag in the fridge overnight (2% milk was all I had so I used that, but I suspect buttermilk would do even better) and then I fried part dipped in fishfry and baked part with a butter garlic mixture. The fried part blew away the baked part. It was the nicest white flaky meat you could ever want to eat. I was impressed...

I'll see if I can dig up the link.

And being new to all of this, just about the only sharks we have been catching are blacktips which I hear are among the best...

Re: other shark info...

rdny i would be very cautious about eating some species of shark that you are not 110% sure you can eat... i heard only a few species can actually be eaten...

this just just what i have heard, so it may not be true. but apparently, only some sharks have a digestive system at all, those sharks you can eat... most other sharks do not, so all the waste that goes through their body, is dispersed through their organs/insides, and then leaks out their pores... those sharks are poisionous and should not be for dinner...

with that theory, i would stay away from most sharks unless they are on some menu's around your area.

anyone hear something similiar?

Yep.

I just have a sharp filet knife on the boat and as soon as he stops twitching I just slice him open and flush everything out. After he's rinsed I just throw him on the ice.

I heard from a friend that you can set their head on the side of the boat and hit them with a hammer or small bat and knock them out first. That sounds a little safer.

We did it all the time. One person gaffs the shark and holds it against the boat, the other guy grabs the bat and bashes it in the head. We'd then throw it in the fish box and stand on the lid for a few minutes :D .

I just rig a baitcaster with a long steel leader and a big hook and throw a pinfish off the back of the boat with a float about 3 feet above the fish and leave the clicker on. Sooner or later a shark always seems to hit it.

And yes you can see the red stuff under the skin. The meat is nice and white and the layer is red. Just cut it all off.

I snagged another small one today and went ahead and kept it. Usually the small ones seem to taste better with most things so I figured I'd try this species too. I whacked him over the head with the handle of my net and it did seem to slow him down a little. After that I just man handled him and gutted him out and threw him on the ice.
