What is the original ratio for the Glastron/Carlson CV-27 sterndrive? Seems, our CV-27 have not proper ratio(stern Alpha1 gen1), and with prop spitfire 14x23 engine goes to 5000rpm, V is 35mph :) :)

Ayuh,...... A V-8 motor needs the 1.50:1 ratio,.....

Or possibly a 1.65:1 on a 27' boat,.....

What ratio is on it now,..??

Thank You! We didn't count, and we will(now I'm far away). Other strange thing - our first ridings with solas 4x14X21 seems to go to 30mph on 4000 rpm, engine was not so powerfull. And now we have power, propeller merc spitfire 4x14x23, but speed seems less...

My guess is that you are way way over-proped

verify the health of your engine (compression numbers)
verify your ratio
verify your pitch

lugging your motor is killing your motor

Hi. I know the 23ft Carlson schimitar with a 5.7 had a 1.5 ratio on its MC/early alpha.

I’m your particular case. The results you post fr two different props, don’t make too much sense to me. The speed readings at 5000 rpm with a 23” prop don’t make too much sense at most any ratios perhaps (without checking, I’ll admit)
I suspect your tacho isn’t too truthful, your props or one of them isn’t as it seems or slipping/venting or something similar.
On the up side. Big fan of a cvx. Never seen a 27. Not sure I knew there was one. I have the baby cvx16, rare one too. Uk built thing with larger engine rating and larger pad on the hull. Quick old girl. She’ll ran 66 mph gps last trials…but underpropped and way over revving. Needs more pitch on her and will surely break 70, I’d think.
Any pics of your lovely sounding cvx ?

Yes, all You said is true. It's possible we have some err in speedometer, unfortunately on the last rides I compared with the GPS and it corresponds (american miles per hour, not knots). Here it is on around 3500
I'm thinking also about exhaust gases around propeller.... There was also a bit corals, but they was removed... Original sterndrive for this boat is MC1, I think. But we bought with alpha 1 gen 1... Engine going to 5000 rpm(and probably more, I didn't push, because 4600 are max permited) means not loaded engine. I have more experience with the flying, and all my HG-trikes have propellers, which don't permit to the engine to go to over-rpm.

She’s lovely looking there. From the video. Sure sounds as if your fairly high on rpm for the speed you are doing. Can only assume that if you defo have a 23” prop (that’s suitable and well fitting to the larger gear case you have), then you must have an unusually low ratio outdrive.
Sorry to ask…but is there any chance that this boat may have originally been a jet driven boat and later adapted to stern drive?

No, this is original Glastron Carlson CV-27, sold in Germany. With ONE mercruiser 260 5.7L V8, and sterndrive should be MC1. I found same configuration in Swiss(even same paint). I see in magazines, CV-27 sold with twin Merc 260 from the beginning. Only few test boats made with one engine. I have no explanation for our single-engine. Tobias from Switzerland have no explanation for his CV-27 too. It can be some special order for the rivers and lakes, or, test boats sold in Europe. Twin-engine CV-27 should go to 110km/h, Tobias said - his single-engine CV-27 goes up to 80-90km/h. Two boats are from the 1979, which is the first year of production. I have no answer from Glastron Carlson, it seems old company ended. Here is the serial number https://drive.google.com/file/d/18ZtPur_ZxVMiO8kaYJCUFw0u9HqhHIN0/view?usp=sharing

Think I and a couple others said exactly that previously, perhaps. I think (but not certain) that your mc-1 would/should have been a 1.5. The 1.47 I think (but not certain) came along later in Alpha form. Someone will know better than I. Don’t know too much about the mc-1…other than having one about 25 years ago on a ‘79 fletcher 15ft with a mercruiser 140

Yes, You are right, but we have no original MC1, and the nearest Alpha is 1.47. Now we have 23" prop, which permits 5000rpms(and more) I am curious, if we put 25" prop - rpms should be reduced by 300 - 400, and we will be near to the rpm limit, not away. But is it good idea, to compensate reduction coefficient with the pitch of the propeller? In what limits?

If your past the rated rpm with that setup you may have the wrong gear ratio

Or the tach is off. Can't imagine that setup spinning at 5k with a 23p

Ayuh,..... Agreed,...... No way in 'ell a single 350 with a 1.50:1 drive, 'n a 23" prop is spinnin' over 5 grand,....

Sure, no way 1.5:1 drive & 14x23" 4blade prop, to permit engine such rpms. My question is: What can expect, if I put 25" prop, to compensate bigger reduction(probably 1.81) Sorry, I was not clear in prev. post - we have some Alpha 1 gen 1 with unknown ratio, it should be 1.47 for this engine, but I'm sure - it is not :)

Yeah it’s definitely not anything near a 1.5 ratio for sure. It just be way lower.
Seems to be a fair number of old Glastron on the continent. I’ve got a very rare UK built Roger Clark Glastron CVX16. She’s from 1984. Seriously quick machine. Next year she should see into the 70’s with more prop. I notice you guys on the continent often have meeting with other owners. Excellent stuff. Wee picture of my wee boat

Very nice boat! Sure, our CV-27 can't be so fast, but I want to make it near to the specifications :)

I will start with the measuring of the current Z-drive ratio. Unfortunately, boat is not near, and for the moment I can't even measure :( For the WOT - I'was afraid to stay on WOT, after the boat is on speed - engine seems can even more. Other strange thing is, that big ventures of the quadrajet carb was not linked, previous owner said - it is for the economy, You don't need them, engine is powerfull enough. But did they work or not - I'm not sure - I must look at them on WOT run.
