Hello. My wife and I have embarked on a restoration of a 79 "Sundance" 17' runabout. All has bone fairly well thanks greatly to hat we've read from this forum. Many thanks to you all. This is our first post and probably not the last. Any input is appreciated.

1. Will "orange peel" happen on the surface of each layer of gel coat applied, or just at the final layer? And will it occur while it's still gelling or at the point of total cured.

2. When masking an area for a stripe to be applied, when is the time to remove the tape without compromising the edge? At what point from application (wet), to gel, to full cure. (PVA will be applied at final coat.)

Thanx for the feedback.

Welcome to Iboats lover of S :) .. lets get to your questions ..

Orange peel starts as soon as you pull the trigger. The build up of material will sometimes "flow" better in the first or second application. It really depends on your gun/settings/reduction/additives etc. It does not occur while its gelling. You would get runs before you get more peel

2. When masking an area for a stripe to be applied, when is the time to remove the tape without compromising the edge? At what point from application (wet), to gel, to full cure. (PVA will be applied at final coat.)

Im actually baffled why you didnt get any feedback on this question ..

You should apply your PVA Just when the gelcoat starts to be 'tack free' .. Put your finger on the tape line and when its juuuuust starting to pull off on your finger ( not wet ) then apply the PVA. ( sorta inlayed stripe )

Then pull the tape.

But if you want an InLayed stripe .. pull the tape when the base is gellin ..then spray the stripe .. then pva the whole thing... overspray on your main white does not hurt a thing. .. and no more more masking and taping.

You just sand till you get to your stripe lines ( Bang your inlayed :) )

Thanx for the feedback.

No problem :D

Re: orange peel occurance

Thank you for the info, but as we suspected... we have more question(s). We didn't give enough information.

(This is the spot where we wrote a big long question, then deleted it)

I suppose the only real question we have is this... Can we peel off a piece of masking tape if it has 3 coats (applications) of gel coat over it without having the coating come off with it? Assuming 1st coat left to tack, 2nd coat applied and left to tack, followed by the last coat (no PVA applied yet)

Thank you so much Dr. for your input. You are very helpful and we really appreciate it. Have a great day!

Um.. not if it was built up on the tape line .. no .. You would have chattering in the gel.

Best bet is to sand the tape line and get some transparency to the tape line before you pull it.

Your coating of gel should Never come off if it was prepped correctly regardless of a tape pull. It will Chatter and chip on the tape side .. but should never on the coated side. Pull your tape before the gel hardens .. or sand the tape line before you pull it.

Hope this helps.
