I have a 2005 Nitro with a 2005 135hp Optimax. I want to take the boat in a river which is brackish water. I see that there is a Saltwater Optimax which is not the one I have. Can I bring my motor in salt or brackish water or will I have a problem?

Re: Optimax in salt water

First of all the difference between the salt version and fresh water version is likely a few more stainless steel fasteners. There are probably no differences in the block or other parts of the powertrain. You might spray the powerhead with some corrosion guard stuff. There are several competing brands.

If you trailer that boat, and plan to flush the motor after every use, there is no issue. If you plan to leave it in salt water, I would make sure to look it over and see if you get corrosion on various places. Grease the steering rod and swivel bracket more often. However, this advice is no different than I would give anyone (freshwater motor or not) who had a boat moored in saltwater.
