long story short....first dunk this year was yesterday for a small derby..

good news we caught a few fish but gave up early because i was taking on water! i thought it was from the bellows since i found it dripping from the gimbal area. but there was just way too much water for the dripping to accumulate..

so today i filled the hull with water! and found this

so i grabbed the grinder and found a major void in the glass...nothing but air (and water) beneath the gelcoat. the roven mat looks real dry and the water is coming out through the roves. this isnt the only crappy glass job ive found on this thing!

what would you recommend doing for this?
please say fill it with marine tex or mix up some "peanut butter"
i want to go fishing! :(

can it safely be done from the outside? or should i cut a hole in the new glassed in deck from last spring??? and if i do have to get at it from inside i believe the stringer is covering it.?.?
recommendations??
i dont care how it looks, thats no issue!

I feel your need to fish ;)

You could use marine tex BUT marine tex is epoxy and you will not be able to gel coat repair over that. I would use regular fiberglass and lay a few layers of cloth. Maybe a gel coat repair over that or just sand smooth paint and go fishing.

thats not an issue since its painted with rustoleoum...

ive never used marine tex though.... is it easier to work with upside down?
or what about gel coat paste? i have a can of that but is it wise to use filling such an area?

By the looks of it the most difficult part is getting the repair area clean. You may have to grind it out a bit more in order to get it cleaned out. Is that a chine?

yes it is on the edge of the chine...thats why im curious how i should tackle it. if you click on my pics they enlarge.

i will fill in the cavity and layer glass over if i have too, im just curious what everyone thinks is best.

Well if the water is gone....... go with the marine tex since you painted the hull..... I am pretty sure you need to apply it to a dry surface.......

i may have a marine tex repair kit laying around that i had bought for my mfg... let me check and see if i have it, and you can take it if i do...

and if you really need to fish, give me a shout and we will hit chateaugay or chazy lake.

thanks bob..... its still drying so i cant do anything for a couple days anyways. thankfully it warmed up in the 70's and sunny these couple days!

since its not actually cracked, i should be ok with just filling it? when i painted it there was a chip in the gelcoat in that area, but didnt notice any actual damage.

You are going to need to penetrate in just a bit to where it is solid..... placing marine tex on the outside might be like coating a balloon and you will leave a void. You want it to be solid.

Now here is a great hint. Get some 2" plastic packing tape ...... after you apply the marine tex cover it with the tape and smooth it out through the tape..... let it dry then remove the tape and it will be super s m o o t h ;) when the marinetex is wet under the tape it also allows you to force it in and press on it.

much appreciated andy, but i think im going to mix up some peanut butter and try to push it in the dry pinholes then apply a couple layers of mat just to be safe.
then i have to change the gimbal bearing and bellows..:(...but considering ive never replaced them yet since ive owned it, i guess its overdue.
money, money, money, thats all she ever wants ;)

but i might take you up on that offer, since ive never fished the chateaugay. ive fished chazy lake but i was so young i dont remember it :/
i keep being told theres an excellent number of very nice size fish in both if you know where to go.

well if you want to go fishing, you let me know. im planning on taking it out for test and tune tomorrow or thursday, then having the first outing with the family friday. i dont think i have much else going on this weekend into early next week if you want to go. i dont really know much about fishing, but i would like to pick up a few pointers from someone experienced.
