I have begun after a long winter..and part of spring..,,Removed cap..and started in on the floor..removed all cardboard flotation..removed all rotten stringers, and cross members..I was only able to salvage 1 cross member..what a friggin mess...I then tackled the transom..cut out the skin from the inside..started to work away at it..I was making real nice progress..but the wood is so saturated at the bottomof the transom it is swelled putting alot of pressure against the 3" sections i left of the transom. .. I am having a terrible time getting out the corner pieces and the very bottom. I have tried chisels a 3/4 inch wood bit, a circular saw, screwdrivers..etc.. and then...i cut threw the side of the transom corner with the chisel.Epoxy will fix this..should I also use Biax to patch tear or only epoxy?..I know this will take time but does anyone have a suggestion at how to work this swollen wood out?..(Im thinking its just going to take patience..and time)

Re: Opinions Before I Remove Outside Transom Skin!!

I cannot budge this plywood. Its locked in tight as can be. Poked 3 more holes through transom with various tool in addition to the 23 holes that are in the skin from PO gadgets. I believe I will have to remove the outer skin to get out the old soggy wood. I cant believe how wet it is after 6 months indoors!

Can I save the skin and re attach after new transom is installed? Epoxy it onto the new wood and then re glass to the hull.
Please chime in with suggestions.

I read where a few members have used a chain saw to get those stubborn parts out. Others have taken a length of angle iron or flat iron and sharpen the end on a grinder and drive it through.

You are so close, cutting the outer skin would make for more work, and its better if its not cut.

grove it out a section at a time even if its one inch.Keep pluging slow.A cutoff wheel will also cut wood.

I used a chain saw and it worked REALLY well (I had it dead empty in 3 hours). You can use a chain saw or a 24 grit flap disc on a grinder to finish off that wood. No matter how long it takes to carve that wood out, it will take longer and cost more if you cut the outside. Don't do it!

I have tried the cutoff wheel..it had the .045 abrasive cutting wheel..it smoked the wood..I do have the flapper discs I will try out next..I can get to the bottom of the transom with a circular saw in thin slices..the sides are deep and packed tight. I will try a chainsaw as a last resort. I have read the post stating it works well..just a bit apprehensive as I do not want to slice any more of the intact outer skin.
Thanks for the support guys..I needed to hear it even though I have read 90% of the threads about this task..its intimidating at first.

the flap disks will take it off. It will take forever but it is the only tool that I could use when I did mine. Just take your time, let the grinder do the work and keep it moving and she'll be done in no time...well lots of time...but whos counting. You will get there.

To the guys that have used a flap disk on the remaining wood; arent you glad your hull is fiberglass and not wood????????!!!!!!!!

The cut-off wheel works on wood also. Try it.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I like the fact they have one for "fine finishing" jobs as well, I'm sure those five more blades would produce a sander like finish

Actually it's still in production and used by quite a few wood and ice carvers. They do have another product that might do the trick that's not quite as scary looking. It's a carbide tipped sanding disk.

electric chainsaw, you can hear if it touches glass, I did mine and barely a scratch on the glasswork. Sears sells them for around $120.
