Changed water pump, so had to drop lower unit. After I had the whole thing put back together I found this large round washer looking thing, (about 2" diameter). From looking at the parts diagram it looks like it is the upper shift rod seal. I don't have my service manual with me, so just wondering if anyone knows if I have to drop the unit again to get this back in, and is it critical?
Found the answer... Now that I got home and looked in the service manual.
Actually the last step on the lower unit re-install is to slip this seal over the shift rod just under the powerhead. Can't imagine it does much where it sits, but now I don't have any "left over" parts and feel much better.
