did you check the inside of the water pump? sounds to me something is binding in the pump, I'd drop the lower again remove the water pump hosing and see if something is amiss. Turn motor upside down and shine a light in toward the power head and make sure nothing is in there. good luck.

Is it a Sierra impeller? I heard things about those being too tight on motors.

Wiggle the shifter, and see if the noise changes or goes away. Did you replace the stainless steel plate under the pump housing? If so, did you remove the old one first?

Re: OOPS i think i messed up

Whining is usually caused by excessive pressure being applied to the top of the driveshaft, resulting in a downward pressure of the driveshaft against the lower unit. If all is well pertaining to the lower unit portion, make sure that there is no foreign material/substance on top of the driveshaft or in the crankshaft spline area.

Even excessive grease on the top driveshaft splines will result in a hydraulic downward pressure I speak of, in which case, take your finger and simply wipe the grease from one spline. This will allow the excessive grease in the crankshaft to flow from down and out of that wiped spline.

Re: OOPS i think i messed up

when i was installing the water pump i accidentally raised up on the driveshaft it came up about 4 inches is there any way that could have caused the problem i have taken the lower unit back off 4 times and still the same noise so surely the top of the shaft couldnt go back in wrong 4 times i looked at the exploded view of parts in the lower unit and underneath the driveshaft there is a detent spring and balls and what im thinkin is when i raised that shaft maybe that spring came out but i don't know how to check that or anything i am just starting to work on outboards so not much experience

If the drive shaft come up 4 inches, then the drive key for the water pump impeller is most likely out of position. Parts may be interfering and tight. You probably want to go back in and pull the drive shaft again and reassemble the impeller drive key and ensure the water pump impeller petals are folded in the appropriate direction.

Re: OOPS i think i messed up

It's common practice to remove the driveshaft completely as it simply pulls out of the lower unit. Removing it does not interfere with any of the lower unit components.... it simply slips out, slips in.

Do as JD above suggests and double check the water pump installation. The easiest way to install the water pump is to have the driveshaft removed, install the water pump impeller plate on the lower unit, then install the water pump on the driveshaft, then slip the assembled unit into the lower unit and onto the impeller plate.

Use a little dab of grease to hold the drive key onto the driveshaft, it keeps it in place while you slide the cup and pump housing over the impeller. Make sure you get the blades of the impeller folded the right way when inserting it into the pump housing, I grease them so they go in easy.
