.... As far as the water pocket that is the top of the lower unit everything I've read about those is to leave them alone unless you absolutely have to. (bolts break)

When you have the drive split for the water pump change, pressure test the water pocket cover. If it's leaking, then the same applies as for the water pump base gasket, exhaust gases get forced in and aerate the water, leading to less cooling...

It's in the bottom of the top box, not the top of the lower box.
