One of the studs on the sterndrive is angled too much when I rethreaded it, so it's not aligning properly with the transom mount.

I just did a dry fit with the gimbal housing to the transom mount outside of the boat. I had noticed that one of the gimbal studs that I had rethreaded in the gimbal housing is angled too much causing the two parts to not match up properly.

Question: Do I re-tap the gimbal housing stud slot to get the angle ( which I don't want to do), bend the stud slightly, or hollow out the area slightly where the stud goes on the gimbal housing to make it fit , I need about approx 2 or 3 mm to make it fit properly. What would you do, your thoughts. I'll post a pic soon.

My neighbor (who is a boater and a good handyman) suggested to heat the stud with map gas while it's in the gimbal housing, put two nuts on top of the stud and hit the nuts with a hammer to get the angle. What do you think?

Oxygen/acetylene torch IMHO just because I have a set. Doubt Map torch will get stud hot enough

You'll probably break the bell housing trying to heat and bend the stud with it installed

Remove the stud, clean out/straighten the threads in the bell housing and reinstall the stud straight. If you can't get it you may need to go bigger with the hole and install a helicoil

If your new threads are strong enough ? Just file away the plate hole carefully until it slides down easily. DO NOT tighten the daylights out of the nut and stud.

My neighbor heated up the stud with map gas and we were able to slightly tap it into place. It's all good. Thanks for the input.

If your new threads are strong enough ? Just file away the plate hole carefully until it slides down easily. DO NOT tighten the daylights out of the nut and stud.

That was the next step if the map gas torch didn't work.

if your stud is cross-threaded. the only solution is to remove it, correct the threaded hole, use a helicoil if needed.
