One last question about glassing in my deck, with diagram

I am going to have my stringers bedded in by Wednesday. The deck will soon follow.

Here is my understanding on how to laminate the deck into the hull.

First I cut the plys to size, coat the underneath with a couple coats of poly resin with wax and let it set. Then screw those plys to the stringers and cross braces with stainless screws (using 5200 caulk to seal the screw holes and heads), fiberglass 1.5 oz chopped strand mat and 6 oz hexel woven on top the deck plys and go up as far up the sides of the hull as I can. Let it set.

Anything I forgot? :)

Oh, the fun noodles flotation. :)

Someone mentioned having a PCV pipe at the bottom of the hull to aid in drainage. I assume this will have many holes drilled in it. Right?

If there is anything I missed please let me know.

BTW, I decided to strengthen the smallest stringers. The thickness is only 3/4 inch when a cut out is made for the cross braces. The original stringers were broke in that spot. Spent the 4th laminating them together. :)

hi batty....

use chopped strand matt on the underside of the deck as well.
resin by it self is very brittle and will crack......that means no benifet at all,
if you cant afford to glass the under deck .....paint the sucker !

as far as the holes in the pvc......that depends on where the water is going to gather from......dont drill into a foamed area....only drill in an area like a ski locker.........if you have holes in an area with foam in it ....the water will drain into the foam.....you dont want that.

if you use the pool noodles.....you can drill any where you want in the pvc.....but remember.....if you drill into it.....water will leak out of it as much as will get in.....

cheers bud.....good work

Hey Darren, it was nice of that pre-school toddler to draw that mock up for ya :D

Have fun with those stringers and deck man, sounds like you will be over the hump after this and everything else will be gravy.

Almost have the deck in. Just need to patch up some bad spots in the stringers, bed the cross braces in and wait for a couple more gallons of polyester resin. :)

Here are the deck sections laid in place.

My own personal preference, at least when using epoxy, is not to screw the deck down, but rather to glue it down.

If you first glue cleats (1x1 boards) next to the top edge of the stringers/ribs to widen the edge, you can then put peanut butter glue mix on and set the deck in place on it.

Weight it down and wait for cure. No sealing with 5200 required, no holes in the deck, and it's stronger than the screws.

Not sure how well it'd work with poly, but it's nice not to have to deal with the screws.
