Although the carp is a very lowly creature in the US, in some countries where protein is hard to come by it is considered a good meal. About a decade ago I heard of some exporting of carp to other countries. I didn't hear any complaints from local fishermen :)

How is a Drum to eat anyway? Caught quite a few out of Oneida Lake this year, but tossed em all back. They sure do put up a good fight...I always say "It's either a channel cat or a drum" when I got one on the way in!

I knew a guy who would catch carp in Irondequoit bay and then keep them in his backyard pond for a few weeks, feeding them corn.He claimed that this got rid of the mud taste.<br />Anyone who has caught a 2 foot plus carp out of the great lakes knows that ,pound for pound ,they outfight most fish

recipe for eating carp and drum<br /><br />Put both types of fish on a wooden board after cleaning. Put said board with fish ( of your choice) in oven and bake until edge of board starts turning brown. Remove from said oven and discard said fish and eat the board. :D :D

I thgought carp and drum had a hell of a lot of bones. I either throw them back or if I know someone who will eat them, I'll give them away. They do put up a hell of a fight though. Has anyone been to that restaurant on lake Lewisville where they have hundreds of what I would say good 15 pound carp that will eat dog food that you throw out. It's a sight to see. I tried to lip them but that is a hard thing to do.

The way to lip a carp is by using a bait type called boilies.<br />You can make this by mixing a dough with flour, corn and some vanilla concentrate. You make it so it feels like playdough. Then you boil it like playdough(ask your wife or daycare teacher).Once it is ready, prepare baitballs with a loop of 2 pound line going through it.Instead of putting the bait on the hook, you put the loop of line on the hook so the bait hangs about 3/4 inch below the hook.Make your loop so it tightens around the hook. Some people thread the loop through a bead and put it in the dough. <br />When a carp hits,it sucks the bait into its throat and then it takes off. This way,the hook never gets to the throat.<br />believe it or not but there is a huge industry in Europe around carp fishing.Just google "boilies" and you will see what I mean

bull heads - an old German neighbor of mine loves 'em<br /><br />if you don't know any better Burbot.<br /><br />and if you're an older Minnesota native .. Perch.<br /><br />hmmmm ... <br /><br />paddle fish -or- Spoon Bill Catfish - - used to snag them as a kid on the Mississippi and give 'em away to the other guys on the bank.<br /><br />Sturgeon is looked at by many as a rough fish ... but, is VERY good.<br /><br />I HATE Lake Trout. <br /><br />We call them 'oil cans' for more than one reason but, other folks flip over catching and eating them.

So what makes a "trashfish" anyway? If it can tug a line, what's wrong with it? Most people are catch-and-release anyway.<br /><br />Bowfin

Bowfin said it right...I know people that called a 35# mahi mahi a trash fish (OK, they actually used another word but this is a family oriented site). Granted, they were fishing in a $50k billfish tournament where you lose points if you break a line above the leader. One lost mahi could cost them the tourney and the money.

I believe another way to put it would be "undesirables".<br /><br />Tom2697 - in regaurds to the situation of a tournament .. yea .. fish that weigh 35lbs in a tournament that is weighing fish on the board that are several hundred pounds such as one with a 50K purse you mention ... <br /><br />...that 35lb fish is a distraction, lost time, and possibly a missed opportunity to that boat and crew.<br /><br />although you and I hooking into it would be all smiles ear to ear on a sunny afternoons jaunt.

One mans trash.......<br />I usually fish for bluegill & crappie. No catch release here unless they're babies.<br />"I" (repeat I)consider bass & catfish "trash fish".... they sure are fun to catch, but will never see the inside of my belly.... <br />(actually, only parts of the panfish see my belly :) )<br /><br />(had to edit: I DO release overly large bluegills or crappies, need the big fish to make big baby fish)

Hey skunk, what is your favorite way to clean such a small fish? Do you fillet them or scale and gut them and fry them whole?

Suckers are good to eat in the spring when the water is cold. I catch and release now but I use to cut my suckers up in cubes, bread them and deep fry them long enough to dissolve the bones, The kids loved them.

when I was a kid, if dad caught a sheepshead while<br />bass fishing, he would slam it on the side of the<br />boat and kill it... they eat all the bass eggs.<br />now i see all these big tourneys on TV down south<br />where these are highly prized.<br />bream (bluegill/sunfish/pumpkinseed etc.) just<br />don't get big enuff up here to make it worth it<br />but they are awful tasty... ;)

In Louisianna we used to eat carp, drum and gar all the time. As well as trout, reds bass and crappie. Its all in how you cook it. A good cajun cook like my mom can make a gar or carp taste as good as anything else. Carp and gar were generally pressure cooked, then mixed with seasoning and fried. Drum cut into small pieces and fried is as good as any fish, just dont try to fry a real big one as they can be a little chewy. But if you use the big ones in a stew or soup they tenderize nicely. Works well for big redfish too,( which by the way is a drum.)Carp are considered one of the best eating fish in parts of Europe and the orient. Bon Apetit!

I scale & fillet them the old fashioned way. I saw a guy last month at a cleaning site that was just filleting & skinning them. Looked like a cleaner method, but I'd guess you'd need a darn good knife. <br />There was a good thread a couple months ago (found it) that had a lot of good advice. I'm still trying to learn eurolarvas method which I posted a picture of. <br /><br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=001405#000000 <br /><br />(it appears the picture I posted of euro's method is no longer active. I will repost another one later when I get home from work ;) )

Re: one fisherman's trash

Friend of mine went over to europe to visit some customer and the one had a giant mounted carp on his wall and was very proud of it!! <br /><br />Go figure!!<br /><br />animals taste like what they eat so if you have a clean pond or tub put the carp in there and feed some good fish food, it helps to clean them out<br /><br />had one neighbor that what ever went into the boat he ate, he also ate the eels we caught, he said if we caught an eel to call him and he would come right over.<br /><br />Never had eel, but I would try it...<br /><br />Tell you the truth the only fish I do avoid is grouper, I have seen too many people get fish poison from bad grouper....dont know why
