Well long story short had a seized motor (3.8) four winns. Done some testing and checked tail oil in the 3 sections ( inter. Upper. Lower) only the upper had metal shaving and was dirty dirty oil.
Got the upper gear case separated amd can visually see metal shaving in the case.

Can I easily rebuild this or would it be best to find a used stringer??

I'm located in colorado and am new to boating. Any help would be greatly appreciated! !

The gears don't look chewed chipped or ruined. But I'm having issues removing the entire ball gear shaft assembly.

Welcome aboard:

Not sure which Stringer you have - and I've never re-built a gear case. However, you can sometimes find a replacement upper gear case (don't need the whole drive at this point) rather easily on eBay or CL. My leaning would be to try that first.

I believe it's a 400/800 stringer? 3.8 v6

Well not trying to be a cheap a** but I don't wanna invest alot due to the fact idk what the boat is even worth you know. I never looked into just find a upper case. So will look into that.
Hopefully tomorrow I will get that gear fully out just to inspect where the shavings are from

How much do you have into the boat? Most people would tell you, let a Stringer die and move on. I've kept mine going for a while, and like it well enough ... but the day it hits $2k to fix, she's probably a goner.
