HI
I am going to replace my OMC outdrive with a mercruiser using a kit that is commonly available.
Could all you mechanics out there tell me how long this will take. My mechanic has never done it before and is no idea how long. I need a rough idea so as i can budget?

Cheers All

Is this kit you speak of the SEI conversion from the Cobra to a Alpha I Gen II drive?

Sterndrive Engineering: Conversion kit

Of so, and I haven't done one myself, I would guess in the 4-8 hour range. A lot depends on access, and abilities.

I believe the only hang up you may have is switching the direction of the shift control.

Many thanks and if there is any tips on this changing the direction of the shift control please feel free to sate them.

Dave

There's really no "Tips" or special procedures for "switching" a cockpit shift control.

Just about ALL of the newer ones are designed for either direction (and multiple [brand] OB or I/O) shifting.

It simply entails moving the end of the shift cable to another hole in the actuator inside the shift control.

When I swapped out my OMG 460 King Cobra with the Bravo, I replaced my OEM OMC controller with a new Teleflex CH-1700 controller because I wanted a nice new "tight" controller.

I didn't look to see if the old one was switchable AND it's possible that the old OMC controller shift cable connection only worked in "one" direction. If that's the case, you'll need to get a new one.

If your old controller is 20 years old, loose and corroded, you'll want a new one anyway.......

I also replaced BOTH my throttle and shift cables. I wanted that thing to shift smoothly and positively......and it does!

Cheers,

Rick
