Re: OMC Stringer

I found a newer 400 series upper for my outdrive. Will any 400 series work?
The bottom end is shot in the outdrive but the upper is good. Will I b able to build one out of the two?
I was also wondering what a reasonable price would be for an outdrive with blown bottom end. They want $600 but I was gonna offer $400.

$600 is a good price so long as the unit it mechanically sound. Of course, still try to talk him/her down. I would drain the gear oil out of it and check the drain plug magnet for metal shavings/pieces and also pressure test it. Make sure the oil that you drain out of it is not all milky and chunky indicating it has had bad seals for a while.

Here is a thread on how to build your own pressure tester. Very easy and will only cost you about $35: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1573303#post1573303

The upper you need is the 21T/19T ratio OEM#981229. Not all 400 series uppers are the same. There are three different gear ratios available. You must get the 21T/19T one for it to work with your engine. There should be a steel plate stamped on to the upper that has that part number and the serial number listed. Have the seller provide you with that number.

If it all checks out and you do buy it, I would still disassemble the unit to reseal it and replace the impeller.

Ok I have the outdrive. Set me back $600 and $50 for the seal kit. Here goes.

Make sure you get a new impeller kit with housing as well. You will also need spline grease, marine grease, loctite 680 for the water pump shaft key, new shims for the bearing retainer and some Johnson/Evinrude Gasket sealer.

Re: OMC Stringer

according to Seloc, a 1976 120 upper and a 400 upper have different gear ratios.

Overall, coupling the 400 upper to the electric shift lower will result in a 1.78:1 overall ratio drive instead of the original 1.92:1

it should work ok at that ratio (similar to overall of the 400's), but you will need to change propellers to get the engine in the correct wot rpm range

if this is a 16 or 17' boat, should be ok. If it's a 19 footer, might have an issue.

what pitch is the current prop?

The boat is 16ft. I am not sure what the pitch of my prop is. I have the new seal kit in and ready to give the boat a try today. Even if all I can do today is troll with my kids it will b a good day.

Well was beautiful day on the water today. Boat takes a little bit to get up on plain but when it does she boogies.I think prop is 16 x 14 or something like that. Does that sound right? Also an idea why my steering would be stiff under power?
