OMC Stringer Tilt.

When I tilt my lower up, it seems to stick there. Sometimes it sticks in the down position but not as often

It also sheared the tabs off the motor, so having to replace it.

I was told the quadrant gear rack, (can't think of the name,) might be the problem. Does anyone know of a fix? It seems there was a recall on some of them?

Thanks

? What tabs? Do you mean the tapered dowel pins?

Have you had the trunnion caps off for inspection? If they've never been greased, they may be on the verge of siezing, holding your drive up or down.
There's a grease nipple under the rubber bumper stop on both sides, they just pry off.

If the trunnion bearings are ok, the problem will be in the tilt drive.
The gear rack is bronze, and almost bullet proof.

Re: OMC Stringer Tilt.

The tabs I'm talking about are the ones on the end of the motor shaft that go into the hammer coupling. I was trying to get the tilt to go up, and it sheared these off in the hammer coupling.

The trunions seem ok, I can lift the foot up easily by hand, but greased them anyway.

I replaced motor, replacing o rings and gaskets. I read in one forum, where you needed to use 2 gaskets on the clutch cove or the clutch shaft will bind on cap.

all the teeth on the quadrant gear and pinion are in good shape and mesh well.

It's still doing it, but I haven't put the gaskets on the cover yet as I was testing it with the cover on and no gasket. I'm hoping that the clutch shaft is binding on the cover.

What do you think about my process? Everything is well oiled and not rusty.

Going back to it today and try the 2 gasket thing and not tighten the bolts so tight, (hopefully,) this will solve it.
