omc stringer 400 ignition switch fuse getting hot. (battery Pole)

alright. fuse keeps getting hot with the current setup. (the way we bought it). so here is my question. should the fused big red wire (going to the switches) be on the battery terminal on ignition switch? and the orange fused thats on the ignition switch battery terminal be going to the switches where the fused red is?

Hard to say that one color wire would go to a different location. The wiring looks like its not factory so unknown if it was done correctly or not. If it works right then it was probably done correctly for the most part

Heat from wiring most always comes from a bad connection. A bad connection produces heat. Those spring loaded fuse holders are not the best. Open them up and look at contacts

Depending on the manufacturers technique and preferances, some decided to send 12V power to the accessories including the instrument panel through the ignition switch. I dislike that because ignition switches don't generally like to carry heavy accessory loads. Others ran a separate 12 or 10 gauge wire pair (positive and negative) directly from the battery to the helm with a 30A fuse in the positive lead within a foot or so of the battery. The ignition switch then got it's power via the harness running from the engine bay or outboard. Since there are two 12V sources in your case, I suspect you have both connected to the switch. If that's the case, the red wire and a ground should come directly from the battery and connect at a 12V and ground bus at or near the console. The orange wire is likely the 12 volt feed from the engine harness. Only you can sort this out especially if the wiring has been messed with. You would NOT have two 12V sources feeding the same accessories.

i put the 12v red. (thick) to the switch (bat) and put the orange over to the accesories (switches). the fuse on the red does get warm , but after hearing some sizzling sounds in the fuse holder , and wiggling it then the sound stopped. i am going to switch this fuse out for a heavier blade fuse. but all seems to be working just fine with this around this way now.

I would suggest getting a different type of fuse holder

Replacing the fuse holder sounds like a good idea but be careful on installing a higher amperage fuse. The fuse rating matters, you want the fuse to blow before the wire melts.

I am now running a 40 amp breaker on the main red. Going to bat on the ignition.
