omc shift rod is stiff

I bought the manual for my 86 cobra, read through it, but I still have no idea how easy the shift rod should move, mine takes quite a bit of force to move. Anyone?

should be pretty smooth, almost effortless. may have corrosion, bad adjustment.

there was a scale buildup on the rod that wouldn't get down
by the oring.


when setting it up, is there a trick to setting shift rod height without the tool?

i used a carpenters sliding square.i cut the bubble area off and used a piece of flat stock and came off the head of the shift rod plate. worked great.i got the factory manual on ebay and it didnt say much.more info on stuart hastings site.

i measured shift rod height in neutral then set bell crank height to match..make sure shift cable measurement is set to spec

used the square method, worked great. now the problem is I'm missing the shift lever and stuff that goes on the end of the cable. took it off to change the cable and I think it was accidentally thrown out.

Check the BILGE, everything ends up there.

no, this is the side by the drive, all the stuff that would make the shift rod move up or down.
