OMC Seadrive 2200 rpm limit

Help my 1.6 liter seadrive will not go over 2200 rpms,but will start an idle 600 rpms like a champ.im thinking timing is off lots of new parts<br />flushed fuel system tank new gas filters.i can<br />advance timing by hand and get to 2700 rpms <br />but that is all.any place to start looking would be a help thanks

Hi Check the S.L.O.W. Limitter Its in the manual how to do it. But I am sure you can type slow or limitter.or overheat. any one of these should get you a desctiption of how to check it out. This is a built in limmiter that will hold the engine at 2500 rpms and below do to heat. it may have failed.<br />steve

looks like a trip to the Library as i dont have a manual,the boat runs cool though new pump <br />and thermostats.the engine did fire up and run<br />4500 then shut straight down then only 2300 rpm

i have just checked the S.L.O.W from info from<br />library and thats checks ok.im begining to think<br />its fuel related now.as the engine seems to flutter when wide open under load,only 2300 rpms tho,the ball has to be pumped up after every restart,once under way primer ball stays up<br />going to check timing today or tomorrow,also will<br />check gas line connects to tank.any ideas will<br />be helpful keep them coming thanks

I had a similar problem on my 99 Evinrude 225. It's due back from the mechanic tomorrow but he says it was the crank position sensor. Mine wouldn't go over about 2000 RPM's but would start and idle like a champ. we'll see...i'll be puttin her in the water as soon as I can.

What year is your motor? I have a pair of 1987s and mine should turn 5500 rpm at WOT.<br /><br />There is a procedure on this site for checking timing without the motor running. Check posts by Joe Reeves I think - - use the red search at the top of the page. I wouldn't set the timing by hand. You take a chance of burning a piston.<br /> <br />You really need a manual to troubleshoot properly and I would get only the OMC shop manual. The SeaDrives are quite complex should you need to work on it. Mine have been solid so far.

Solittle my sea drive 198? came with my 1989 20 Sportcraft i dont really know how to tell.1.6 liter,have know<br />idea on the horse power either?.i have looked at <br />the post about the timinging from Joes reply<br />i opened the throttle wide open,tied the advance<br />linkage forward all the way, but i dont see the rubber stop or a way to adjust the timing.having a friend come over and help after work today.i<br />have ordered a manual but delivery is a week away or so.is there a pic to look at that you know of.also WOT in gear or out?<br />thanks LTDan out

My 1.6L 1987s are rated at 110 hp per the OMC shop manual.<br /><br />The only other advice is to troubleshoot per the manual when you get it. You may have something electrical that is breaking down.
