OMC overstroke switch?

I have a 1981 OMC 3.8 there is a overstroke switch on the shift converter, when i depress the button on it, it does nothing while engine is running, should this switch stall engine?......................... interrupter switch causes slight engine stall which is believe is correct for shifting from forward or reverse.

Thanks chiefalen, that's just info i needed, will check when get home tonight. manual i have does not have any info on adjustment or operation of switches, just neutral adjustment on shifter.
