Re: OMC King Cobra 460
Motor oil is a VERY emotional thing for most people! If you ask about oil in any thread it immediately turns into an oil thread!
Most would suggest that you run a DIESEL rated oil to get the added ZDDP anti-wear additive to protect the camshaft. Straight 30 is fine. I run 15W-40 in everything. I have 3 diesels.

Comp Cams says to use Shell Rotella T:

Now having said all this, I would be willing to bet that if you use Mercury Marine or other 25W-40 NMMA FC-W oil you won't go wrong. If you are not going to use that oil, use any DIESEL rated SAE30 or 15W-40 type oil.
I will say that when my brother owned my Four Winns Liberator 211 (Powered by a wonderful OMC 460) that he bought new, he ran Castrol 20W-50 in it and (UGH!!) Slick 50. I tore the engine down with only about 250hrs on it and found 8 or more FLAT cam lobes!! It had great compression but because the cam was flat it wouldn't turn any more than about 4200 at WOT.
There's no silver lining though.....I read now that because diesels are getting more cat converters and exhaust after-treatment those oils are losing the ZDDP too. Some racing types and cam makers are suggesting using GM EOS and other anti-wear after market "snake" oils.
It looks like oils are leaving our old flat-tappet engines behind.....this isn't as much a problem in roller-follower cam engines.....
I suppose they'll find a suitable replacement for zddp.
Cheers,
Rick
