OMC ignition coil getting real hot

Hi guys i have a OMC sterndrive 3.0L and when running the engine for a while the coil is really hot and when i put my voltage meter on the positve and negative it shows -3.7 when i have the on but engine not started can you let me know what you think it is thanks

move your black meter lead from the coil neg terminal to the battery negative post, place red lead on the coil + and recheck.

should be 9 to 11 v or so with the key on

checking across the coil terminals is not a meaningful test for voltage

I put the negative lead off my meter to negativive on the battery and positive to the positive on coil and 0.03v
then i put my negative lead on the negative coil and got 3.37v

the engine fires up good and runs but the coil gets very hot

you aren't reading or using your meter correctly then, because there is no way in heck the engine will start with .03V to the coil + (or 3.37 for that matter)

i put the black lead of my meter on battery ground and red lead on the positive on the coil with the key on with out starting the motor

i just bought the boat and the person had it before changed the ignition coil,rotor,spark plug cable do you think they put the wrong coil

I check the voltage on the positive ignition coil and im getting 7.8V dc is that too low
and if yes what would cause this thanks

it's a bit low, 9v better. low voltage would cause the coil to be cooler, not hotter.
you might want to change that coil.
