Hello,

I have a 1983 OMC SeaDrive 1.6L engine that will not turn off. This problem started after using fogging oil this past fall. Once started the engine runs with ignition turned off and battery disconnected.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix?

How long does it run for? How do you make it stop. I once had an engine do this, the throttle linkage bound up wide open, it would not stop reving. We pulled the key out, put the choke on, pulled the plug wires, fulled the fuel line. How she did not blow I dont know. Anyway could be a hot piece of carbon build up in your engine, that is if you indeed did pull the plug wires. If not it could be you ignition switch.

If you ran it with the battery disconnected, you may want to take a look at your charging system. They don't like that.

I ran the engine in the driveway yesterday with the hose hooked up. It will run until out of gas. I was able to manually turn it off by turning off the fuel switch on the engine. I disconnected the battery after trying to turn off the engine using the iginition switch. Could this be an alternator problem? The the winterizer mixture/fogging oil be causing this?

You probably no longer have a working alternator. I would suggest getting a shop manual and following it's trouble shooting section.

You can check the alternator by mweasuring battery voltage across the terminals with the engine idling. You should get 13.5 vdc or >.

Shut off the engine using the choke or disonnecting the fuel until you get the problem fixed.
