omc electric shift

1976 tri hull..302 ford 175+ horsepower...
put in to forward and idle along sometimes goes into neurtal. have to put shift lever back in neutral, then in forward again to engage..will take off fine sometimes then just go into neutral and over rev engine..seems to be getting worse...any help would be much appriciated..thanks very much.

I have the same drive in my boat too!

Sounds like either the forward coil is getting weak, or the spring is not engaging properly. Check the coils by testing at the shift wire connections inside the boat. Disconnect the wires, and test the resistance (ohms) on each one. Connect one meter lead to one wire and the other to the drive somewhere that you can get a good connection (bare metal). A good coil should read 4.5 - 6.5 ohms. Repeat for the other wire. If the coils test ok, then it may be a spring problem.

Redneck and GMC both I think are tellin you what I'd be checkin, plus the ground wire from the drive to the intermediate housing.
make sure both ends have good and clean contact.

Under the Exhaust Housing Cover there is a spring and washer, make sure they are in good shape.

Good calls. Also might be a good idea to have your battery load tested as well.


Have you checked the oil in the lower? Any signs of water in there? I got some water in mine when I first got it and it started shifting a little funny. New gaskets on the fill/drain screws solved that problem.

Do you have the proper type-c or OMC Premium Blend oil in there?
