Re: OMC Cobra 4.3L - Outdrive Oil Questions

the impeller when installed needs OMC gasket sealer on the gasket between between the wear plate and the housing and also on the o ring that goes round the impeller housing itself...

Where can I find OMC gasket sealer? Or is there a good substitute?

Are these problems big enough to prevent me from taking the boat out over the weekend (after I replaced the gear oil of course)? The family was wanting to go out, but we may have to postpone while I work on it.

That is your call but if you put the water pump on, you will be pulling it off and draining the oil again once it comes time to pressure test it.

Re: OMC Cobra 4.3L - Outdrive Oil Questions

I have never run mine with the cover off but I don't think that water should be coming out at that spot. there is a pee hole but that is connected to the rubber line that goes down to the upper gear housing...

There is a (vent hole) aka pee hole I know because I have run mine with the cover off after changing the impeller. Check it out hook up muffs unscrew cover and run it will spray out 10'. It is not hooked up to anything I only mention this so you do not think any thing is wrong with water coming out from under the cover if it is coming out of the vent hole. If you look at the cover you will see the vent hole atleast on my you do it is a 86 4.3 since you are down that far go ahead and change the impeller anyway...

Tonight I pulled the prop as cr2k mentioned. After getting it off, I saw what is pictured below. Did I find the/a leak? You can see the milky oil at the bottom. There is a reddish brown o-ring or seal going around the shaft. It seems to be very brittle and is even broken at the top of the shaft, as you can see. What exactly is this? Do you think this could be the place where water is getting into the outdrive? What do I need to do here--replace the seals? How hard of a job is that?

You have a lot of seals here that are potential leakers. You still haven't even seen the driveshaft seal yet! You need to pull the drive and do a pressure test.

Re: OMC Cobra 4.3L - Outdrive Oil Questions

Just an update -- I purchased a new impeller kit and installed it and the water is now coming out of the pee hole drain hose instead of the gasket and the housing. I think the problem here was the 1/4" spot on the gasket that was gone (as shown in previous picture).

I took the boat to a marine shop and had it pressure tested. It held up with pressure for 10-15 minutes, and they said my only problem is likely the prop shaft seals. I left it there for them to repair the seals and should have it back by the weekend. Hopefully the seals are truly the only problem.
