OMC and Johnson/Evinrude interchangeability

I'm new and recently purchased my first boat. I know next to nothing about the different brand outboards that are available. My boat however has a 1992 OMC 40hp short shaft motor on it which unfortunately threw a rod and left a hole in the block when the previous owner had it. I've found that the short shafts are rather difficult to find, at least on craigslist or the like. Are the lower units interchangeable between johnson, evinrude and OMC? I was told they are by a coworker but I question his knowledge of boats and motors. Would the lower unit from my 1992 OMC bolt onto a 1993 Johnson 50hp? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Take both model #'s and cross check some part numbers on the Evinrude and johnson website.
