OMC 800 wont "tilt'

I have a 1978 Glastron with an 185 (chevy 350) and an OMC 800 outdrive. The tilt was working on the outdrive until last week. It worked on the way out, but when trying to raise the outdrive on the way into the dock it would not work. I checked all the electronics, they're fine. The tilt motor spins, the shaft is solid, the coupler oK. The motor is spinning and the shaft and worm gear spinning, but not raising the outdrive. The seal had failed on the tilt shaft, so when I opened the cover I had the typical oil and water "milkshake." I added a new seal, dried all the parts and reassembled the unit. Same issues. I took the cover off and found everything turning freely, including the clutch pack. So it appears the clutch is not engaging. Could it be the clutch pack needs replacing (probably at a cost greater than the value of the boat), or am I missing something?

If everything else is turning then it has to be the clutch pack. It seldom needs to be replaced, just dried out and properly lubed. Have a manual at hand before you disassemble the clutch pack. There are specific proceedures for getting it back together again.

Thanks for the advice! I just thought it odd that everything seems to work, but not engage! I'll try taking everything apart and cleaning it again. How exactly does the clutch pack work? Just through centrifical force?

The clutch pack creates a 'slip joint' between the outdrive and the tilt gear. When working properly, the clutch discs have enough friction to allow the torque of the worm gear to transfer through to the tilt gear and lift the outdrive. If you hit something with the drive while moving, the clutch should slip and allow the leg to tilt up so it acts to protect the leg and tilt assy. If the clutch discs don't have enough friction, the worm gear can turn but the torque isn't transfered to the tilt gear as the discs are slipping instead of grabbing.

Clear as mud? :D

Your advice was perfect, I soaked the discs in gasoline overnight, then dried them in the sun, then soaked them in oil, and it worked! Now on to the next problem with my 1978 OMC 800 outdrive. Now that the tilt is working, when I put the boat into reverse or forward the outdrive clatters and shakes or "judders a few times before engaging. Once engaged, it works fine. Any ideas? Perhaps an adjustment, or something more serious?

What idle you have it at? Should be 650-700, mine is at 600.
