Hi.. I'm trying to save an old Bayliner. The hull is in good shape and the 5.0 sbc purrs. I'm going through the tilt mechanism to try and get it working. The hammer blow coupling was in pieces. The inboard half came out with the tilt motor and I was able to fish the spring out but the outboard half won't come out. It's pretty nasty in there, took a pic which I'll try to post. How do I get the outboardd half out so I can reassemble or replace the coupling? I've sprayed some penetrating oil in there hoping it might free things up.

I forgot to add that it turns but won't pull out.

That whole coupling should just fall out. If you can gently put a pair of needle nose on the edge, it should take minimal force to get it out (usually it's' harder to get it to stay in).

I guess maybe if the clutch pack is so badly gunked up, the corrosion may have made it's way up the worm gear ... that could be pretty ugly.

You can get that out from the back side now. remove the retaining plate (27) and the shaft that the hammer blow coupler is on is 46 in this diagram. Not a bad idea remove all of it anyways so you can inspect the tilt gears and get new fluid in there.

Its been a while since I have done that , so there may be a bit more to it. I think you may have to remove the gear that the tilt quadrant rides on . I cant recall for sure.

here is a link to the parts diagram.

Thanks. I've tried grabbing it with needle nose and forceps and can't get it to move. I sprayed the clutch housing out with brake cleaner, soaked the pack in oil and repacked with marine grease per recommendation from an old post. I'll go ahead and remove the clutch pack and clean again.
I have removed the shaft end plate (27), it looks like there should be a snap ring retainer but I'm not seeing a snap ring or groove. I'll try to dig a little deeper.

Looking at it again it looks like the housing may be broken, the rear edge with the snap ring groove is mostly gone and the boss for the port side upper cover bolt is cracked. I've had this boat for 10+ years, I guess it's been that way the whole time. I'll still try to pull the shaft and the rest of the coupling.

With the triangular cover removed and If the drive is either full up or partially at 1/2 way you can push the plug and worm gear out. This way you will be able to grab the shaft and pull it out enough to release the coupling. There should be a thin plastic washer forward of the worm gear. If you pull the shaft all the way out the washer drops into the clutch housing and could bind up the worm and spur gear.
You do not have to remove the clutch pack cover for this.
However if the drive is full down then try using a small pin punch next to the small plate that is in the shaft groove and drive it back enough to remove the coupler. Be sure to put the plastic washers on either side of the coupler before installing the motor.

I've got the quadrant gear out and the drive is lifted. I was able to get the worm gear out and the outer coupler piece fell out. I didn't see any plastic washers anywhere. Also I pulled the ring gear and clutch pack to clean everything up. Soaking the clutch pack in oil overnight. I I'll reassemble tomorrow but now you have me wondering about the plastic washer. I didn't take the shaft all the way out, maybe it's still on the shaft. Thanks for the help!

Ok. I received a new lift motor, fished the hammer blow pieces out of the bilge and got everything back together. Battery fully charged and its doing the same thing. Goes down great, does not want raise unless you give the drive a little lift manually. It's like it really wants to do it, just not quite enough to get it started. Does that sound like an electrical issue or maybe a clutch issue? With the quadrant gear removed the drive seems lift up manually fairly easy ( except that it weighs a lot)

all your battery cable connections to the tilt motor cleaned with 150 grit sand paper until they are shiny?

I think I have everything cleaned up unless I'm missing something between the solenoids and the plug for the tilt motor. It occasionally lifts about half way by itself before it stalls but not always. I've kept the battery on a charger but I'm wondering if a bigger (group 27)? battery might help. Thanks.

Check voltage at motor while it's running in lift direction. Should be 12+/- . A bad connection will have the voltage below 10

Try loosening the 4 saddle cap mounting bolts about 1 turn each that the drive hinges on and see if the drive goes up without any help.
you might hav to clean the trunnion ears.

Yeah I got it on Amazon. I'm sure there is a better source. The last one was supposed to be oem quality from e bay.

Good idea. Tried it, still only goes up between halfway and 2/3 without some help. I have 12.75 volts at the connection to the tilt motor.
