Re: Omc 800 shift problem

my boat is a 1978, the cable i got was off of a 1979 ??i think, I purchessed the entire lower unit and just used the cable. the unit i bought was in fact different then my old unit. The new lower unit had a plunger type shifvt rod in it. my lower unit just had a shaft with splines..

Re: Omc 800 shift problem

my boat is a 1978,
....but has a later lower unit by the sounds of things.

A lot of 78-81 boats were converted to the full mechanical lower unit because the hydromechanical (plunger) type were not reliable and parts were discontinued.

yours must have been updated at some point.

are you the guy in PA?

No, Im not the guy in PA. I supose mine has been converted. so, is the outdrive i just bought junk for me? can i do anything other then go buy another shift cable? Is it possible to use the other lower unit or will i still have the same result? Thank you for your help. I look forward to your reply.

I might be the guy from PA, but I'm not sure why you'd be asking for me in this thread. Regardless, here's a blow-up of the lower units showing shift mechanisms for both hydro & full mechanical shifting:

might be as simple as swapping things around in the remote at the helm to make Fwd Reverse and vice versa, but I've never been down that road.

sell the outdrive and find the right cable its just beating you up to keep trying experiments seen those CABLES FOR MECHANICAL SHIFT 249.00 BUCKS ON EBAY and lower units full mechanical on craiglist 300-400 bucks with the cable " anything worth doing is worth doing right"
