If nothing else, its 20 years old. If you are going to own a boat that old, you really need to know how to do the work yourself. If not, you'll quickly pay more that its worth to the mechanic. It sounds to me like something you'll be tinkering with all the time.

I am with Aaron, it's old and will take a lot of tinkering for sure. I have an 88 OMC small block Chevy and as far as an engine/drive combo, it is about as good as any were in 1988 but now I spend time working on it. If you're worried about it, sell it. A boat is a lot of work - period. It is somewhat less new but even then, if you want it to keep working like new, you have to keep up with the maintenance. If you want to boat be prepared to spend time (and lots of money).

I'm with the other guys, and am responsible for health and well being of a 92 3.0 Liter HO OMC with a Cobra drive. From what I can see as time moves on this will become more evident. :( OMC= Obsolete Marine Corporation :(

Old boats are WORK...period... no matter the drive brand.

Read the rest of the threads from the last 10 days and you'll see what I mean.

If ya got it cheap, run it until it breaks. It only gets expensive when you fix it.

And if your worried about all the flack your "friends" are giving you about the year/brand of boat, forget it. I have a Bayliner with the same engine and an OMC drive. Think of the abuse I get!! If it suits you needs, keep it and have fun. After all, isn't being able to keep the thing running part of the "pride of ownership"!!!

Re: OMC 5L is it a good setup? or should I stay away

What a few people here hinted at, but nobody said outloud is this. OMC doesn't exist anymore. Volvo bought them out finally in the early 90's.
Engines aren't the problem with keeping them, it's the OMC drives, and OMC specific parts that are the problem.
Marine techs that have the knowledge, tools, and literature, to rebuild drives are becoming few and far between. Sure you can ORDER, pay freight, and find used and rebuilt drives, but who is going to do the shift cable changes and adjustments to the ESA system so the thing won't be going bad again or cause you to loose a drive because it was done improperly?

Boy Don, you make all of this crap I am learning refurbing my Cobra sound like I am learning something that will be gold one of these days. I am slowly actually learning how this thing works and what it takes to set it up right )with a little help from some here and a few good sites like the Stewart site on adjusting the shift. Now I'll be one of the few, the proud, the OMC owners!!

I want to be one of the few, the proud boat owners that doesn't have to spend days getting a drive back on without getting a hernia. Or have to constantly babysit a shift mechanism that was poorly designed to begin with. Boating is supposed to be fun. Owning an omc will change that quickly. Like I said, I curse the day that I bought a boat with an omc hanging off the back.

Well all I can say is that you either have to find a good OMC shop that can do the work, or struggle with it on your own. So far the parts issue has not been that much of a problem. I found a great OMC shop here in Long Island and I let them do all the drive maintenance. I told the mechanic there, when he retires, I'll pay him to teach me!

Re: OMC 5L is it a good setup? or should I stay away

sea wolf,

Given your recurring problems, you really should think about building that outdrive holder I referenced above. The hernia issue disappears. One person can easily remove/ replace a drive that lines up. For one that doesn't, like yours, the holder lets you easily maneuver the drive as far as it will go and hold it in place so you can see/ evaluate where the problem is.

Once you figure out and fix whatever the problem is, pulling and replacing the drive for regular maintenance should be a snap.

I know, I've had mine on & off (by myself) at least 3 times over the last week trying to get the shift system set up correctly (put in new transom shift cable). I think (hope) I've finally got it; went back to the beginning & think the shift rod was one turn too high, throwing everthing else off. Put the drive back on and bellcarank seemed to line up with the shiftrod 'v-notch' better this time, but haven't had a chance to see how the rest of the cable adjustments inside the boat go yet.

If everyting is ok, I need to pull the drive one more time & put on a gasket, sealer, etc. Figured I'm better off 'dry' fitting it back together till I get it right instead of wasting gaskets.

I'm guessing (not having done muce other mechanical work, either on boats or cars) that part of the Cobra problem (outside of parts acarcity) may have to do with tolerances/ measurement that may be more tight/ specific than some people are used to dealing with. I mean, 17 13/64" for the shift rod height? 7 9/16" (+- 1/32") for the correct distance at the engine end of the transom shift cable? And the worst (for me), trying to make sure that the bellcrank is perpendicular to the housing. It would seem to be fairly easy if the bellcrank body was the same width, but it tapers from back to front, making it real tough for me to guage perpendicular, even when using an L-square against the housing. If anyone has any tips on how to make the perpendicular setting easier, please pass them on! If it wasn't a one shot deal I'd definitely be searching for the OMC tool, even if it is $35 or $40.

But I have learned alot, which hopefullly will save me quite a bit down the road.

I know how frustrated you must be and until you've got your drive back on I suspect nothing is going to help. But once you've got it back together, perhaps you can focus on the benefits to a cobra. e.g., having access to the waterpump & impeller without having to pull the drive; I've heard that changing bellows is easier than on a Merc; perhaps a few other things I don't know about?

Anyways, good luck!
