Omc 460 No Fuel!

I have a 1989 Bayliner 2755 with a OMC 460 engine. The engine will run with a cup of gas down the carb but no fuel is making it to the carb. I put 10 gallons in an empty tank and the gauge is reading fuel but no fuel to carb. I replaced the fuel filter/water seperator and disconnected the line to the carb but still no fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get an outboard tank with a primer bulb. Hook it up to the fuel filter where the boats tank hooks to.
Prime the system using the primer bulb and see if it keeps running and works the way it should. If it does, then you know the engine is good and time to look at the boat side of the system.

I have a Bayliner Capri 2250 and when it came into Australia naturally it had no fuel in it, I put 20 liters in the tank and it still wouldn't start and noticed the electric fuel pump was mounted half way up the motor, Electric pumps are good for pushing fuel but not good at sucking fuel. I lowered the fuel pump to the level of the tank and away it went, may not be your problem but may help :D

Oh boy!

My favorite engine and drive!!

If you determine that the fuel pump and carb is ok.....You probably have a clogged fuel pick-up screen. It's in the tank.

After you remove the fuel filter and ensure that the fuel lines from the filter to the carb are clear etc.... you'll need to expose the top of the fuel tank. It would be a really good idea to obtain a new fuel tank sender gasket then remove the sender and fuel pickup tube so you can inspect the inside of the tank using a flashlight.

If you find debris in the tank and/or on the fuel pickup screen, get a long piece of clear vinyl 3/4" hose and start a siphon. Use the siphon hose to vacuum out the tank (have a helper at the other end of the hose to switch tanks you're draining into etc.)
Also, jack the bow up a bit to raise the fuel tank.

Do this outside and keep sparks and smoking materials AWAY!

Cheers,

Rick

It looks like the fitting for the fuel pick up is welded to the tank. I don't see how there would be a filter there. I disconnected the hose from the fuel pick up and blew into it (while the fuel line is disconnected from the carb) and i can't get any air to pass through the fuel pump/fuel filter water seperator (filter/water seperator is new) If this helps any a few days ago I unscrewed the filter and there was gas still in it full to the brim.

I removed the fuel sender to see in the tank. I couldnt see the fuel pick up so I put a hose to the fuel pick up and blew in it and bubbles came out the other end so I know my fuel pick up is not clogged

Sounds like a fuel pump problem ?

Looks like you might need to have a close look at the fuel pump......

personally i'd just run the test vs wrapping my lips around 20 year old fuel line. You can buy a cheap combination gauge for like 20 bucks.

Re: Omc 460 No Fuel!

Why don't you just put an outboard tank on like I suggested first thing. Then you will know if you have a problem with the tank, pickup, lines or whatever, or if you have an engine side problem. IF the engine starts after priming and then dies in about 20 to 30 seconds, then you probably have a failed fuel pump.
Blowing into the pickup doesn't do anything but clear the clog off the end of the pickup, All you are doing is non tests and not learning anything from what you are doing.

Probably not. There's a fitting that is screwed into the "welded" fitting on the tank. That fitting will have a tube soldered/brazed on the end that extends into the tank and it will have the screen on the end.

Using an outboard tank will get you started isolating the problem.........

I got the primer bulb and seperate tank but right now my carb is off and I ordered a rebuild kit. Boat has been sitting for years so i'm sure it needs rebuilding regardless. But could this no fuel problem have anything to do with the carb?

Re: Omc 460 No Fuel!

nope, the carb doesn't pump fuel, the fuel pump does.

Have you ran the test yet? Running the motor off an outboard tank only tells you that you have a problem with the boat side fuel system, but it doesn't tell you what that problem is, the fuel system test will if you follow it. I have seen many an air leak in the fuel plumbing.

It could, if the needle valve is gummed up and or the floats aren't dropping no gas will enter the float bowl, some of those ford carbs also have a screen at the fuel inlet, if it clogs with junk then empty fuel bowls will follow.
Your carb is already off so attach a 2 foot length of hose to the fuel line, put it into a clear jar and crank the motor over with stater, gas should pulse out the hose and fill the jar pretty quickly if the fuel pump is good.

Re: Omc 460 No Fuel!

Ok, I primed the fuel pump with the primer bulb and the seperate tank of gas. Fuel pump is pumping when I turn the engine over. Then I attached the primer bulb to the gas tank and pumped gas from the boat to my seperate tank. First the gas was brown for a second then clean and great lookin. I did however jack the bow of the boat up a few days ago so maybe it is actually sucking fuel? The carb is being rebuilt right now. It cost me $35 for the kit and a local marine shop is doing the rebuild for me at a deal for $55. I'll know soon if the sysem just needed priming or the pickup wasnt picking up.

Re: Omc 460 No Fuel!

That brown gas was probably water. I would strongly suggest you intall a waterseperating fuel filter if you don't alreay have one, and if you do have one, change it. And empty the old one into a clear container and check the contents for water
