and add an ESA system - switches ESA electronic module and wire it up to the ignition

is the 83 outdrive the same gear ratio? might want to just use the lower and keep the upper you have- that way you avoid possible backwards steering issue too

Where is the ESA system? Where does it hook hook up? Do I need the shifter off the 83 boat?

it's nowhere
1979 boats didn't have an ESA
1983 boats did - located a half dozen different places on differnt models - mine is bolted to a bracket on the port side manifold
maybe the guy with the 83 outdrive has the rest of the boat - that's the best way to get evrything... piece by piece at a dealer, you'll spend close to a grand putting the ESA system together
diagrams are in the 1983 factory OMC manual

1979 shifter should be fine

If your going to work on the boat yourself, get yourself a manual on OMC sterndrives.

that was good advice back in June, btw... except now you need two - a 1979 manual and a 1983 manual

Yes the one that's on my boat now is a 400 series, i don't think the 400 went to 83 right? and I have the 83 boat I have the hole boat so can you tell me what the system looks like? And thanks for all the help.

400 was 1978-1985

factory ESA only works with points. You can get an aftermarket module that works with Electroinic ign
