OMC 3.0 Hard to start

I have a 1988 OMC 3.0 that is very hard to start. It turns over for a long time before it starts however it runs good after it finally fires up. After it starts it will start fine again if it doesn't set for more that about 15 minutes. It has progressively gotten worse each time I have taken it out this year. I recently changed the spark plugs and ran a can of sea foam through it with no change. Can anyone give me any ideals to check to improve the starting.

What is your starting procedure? Is the choke working?

I don't really have a starting procedure. What is something that you would suggest?

For first start of the day, pump lever 2 times then crank. Try one pump when it is hard to start after sitting a while.

Re: OMC 3.0 Hard to start

There is a wire that goes from the starter solenoid to the coil to provide a full 12v when starting, instead of the reduced 9 or so volts. See what your coil voltage is when cranking. (Remember to ground your meter to something other than the coil (-) terminal) I had this problem and after a new starter solenoid, it worked great. Also, for a starting procedure when the engine is cold, I usually do half a pump and leave it there until it starts. Try that out.

Ok I don't think the choke is closing. What makes the choke close and open? I also pulled the spark plug and checked the fire and the spark was Orange instead of blue.
