Hello ya'll.
I am a new boater. I have recently purchased a 1987 Chris Craft Cavalier with an OMC 3.0. I had the boat on the water this weekend and had noticed a squeek/squeal comming from the engine area. I thought it was a belt. On my way to the ramp something started making a loud clanging noise. I had figured I blew a piston or something because it sounded really bad. Upon further inspection It seems that the crankshaft pulley "exploded". I dont know what its supposed to look like in normal condition but I found what seems to be some rubber that was inserted between two pieces of metal. A hub and an outer "rim" that the belt rides in. Right now the "rim" can be moved back and forth and side by side by hand. There is no rubber left between the metals. If it werent for the fact that the pulley hits the motor mount bracket I could probabaly remove the "rim" by hand.
SO my question is does this sound familiar? Does this happen often if at all? Can I replace the the pulley and go, or could other damage have occured? When this all happened on the water I paid close attention to oil/temp levels and had no sudden changes. The motor was running well with the exception of a loss of about 500 rpm.
Do I have to remove the motor mount to remove the crankshaft pulley and last but not least where is the best place to buy a new pulley. Oh and also is this also the harmonic balancer? I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on this type of situation and cant find much reading on this situation other than the procedure of installing the pulley itself.

On another note, the propeller shaft has a slight bend to it. I can see it when I spin the prop. It doesnt seem to bad and can be felt very slightly in the steering wheel. Will this cause more severe damage if gone un-fixed? Or can I get away with running it a handfull or more times this summer until I tear it down this winter?

Thank you

Sounds like the Vibration dampner came apart. Usually due to rust and corrosion.
Fix it NOW.

and on the propshaft. check it with the prop off and a dial indicator. sometimes its not the shaft . if its out more than a few thousandths then its bad. you can fix it before or after it dies but its usually cheaper if you do it before.

Your propshaft being Visibly Bent,......

Could Possibly be the Reason your Harmonic Balancer Exploded................

Harmonic Viberations can travel thoughout the Entire Driveline,...... Even though the Coupler is Supposed to help seperate the harmonics from the engine,+ outdrive,..... I'm Sure some of the viberations were passed thru to the engine,..........
That,... And nearly 20 Years,... is Reason enough........

And,.. No,.... Harmonic Balancers Rarely do what Your's did,..... Not Unheard Of, But Not Common...........

You'll need a Puller,+ an Installation Tool,......
Ayuh,... The Motor Mount has to be removed.....
And,... I'd throw in a New Front Oil Seal.......

And,..................
Get the Outdrive Fixed............... ;)

Re: OMC 3.0 Crankshaft Pulley Separation

Great! Thanx all for the info. I have some new related questions. Does anyone have any part number info on the harmonic balancer/pulley? I have a Clymer manual but it is pretty simple in this area. Im trying to figure out if this is a pulley and balancer "in-one" or if I am looking at two different parts. I called the local marina to have them fix it but they are two weeks out and started talking about "I cant give an estimate because". They want to replace things while there in there and metioned removing the engine due to space contraints. Bleh, I could do this in an hour with a chain hoist and a pulley puller. So now I am trying to find where I can buy this pulley online. Any help would be appreciated. Again its a 1987 OMC 3.0.
Price and availability would be great.
Thank you

I used a GM # 03826280 on my 74 3.0. Not sure if it's the same as yours.
