Hi all,
I did the dumb mistake of hooking the new battery backwards today !!
Wires got warm and when I straightened the battery cables there is no juice.
Why did I fry? a fuse? if so can anyone please tell me where to find the part that need to be replaced.
I appreciate any help I can get.
Thankyou
It's an omc 2.5 120 hp, 4 cylinder, 1985.

There are 2 fuses in holders look like plugs. They are in the starboard side with a spring clip holding the fuses together.

You can get the fuse at radio shack.

There MAY also be a large "fuse" on the starter where the battery cable connects to the lug. It would look like a 1" square cube if one is used. You may or may not have one.

Thankyou Cheifalen
I found the rubber plugs with the springs holding them together , when I unplugged them from each other there is nothing inside they both look just like plugs. I will need to run to the boat again to check for the 1" box.
I appreciate all your responses

The fuse I referred to is more common on Mercruiser engines I believe... but who knows what can find its way into boats and engines. ;) Here's what the fuse looks like that I am referring to:

After you figure out the fuse situation, check your alternator output with a volt meter to see if that got fried.

Those plugs are for the esa.

Right below them are the plugs for the fuses.

They are held together with the same kind of clips and are thru a steel plate.

Please disconnect the battery before you install the fuse.

Re: omc 2.5 battery hooked backwards!!

The fuses are rather large, should be 50amp, and most likely in a large yellow cylindrical fuse holder towards the back of the engine.

Also, be sure to check any other electronic device that was connected , such as the radio, etc. The reverse-polarity may have fried them.

Best of luck.

Re: omc 2.5 battery hooked backwards!!

There is no square fuse on the starter.

I have the same setup, to the year.

They are black the fuse holders.

The fuses are held together with same sort of clip that the esa plugs had.

And they go thru a steel plate.

Same plate holds the esa module.

Make sure the battery is disconnected, when you open up the fuse holders.

And when you go to buy new fuses bring the old one with you and buy extras to keep on the boat. You will need them.

Bye chance it's not the fuses, please post and i'll help you find what it is, not letting you get juice.

Re: omc 2.5 battery hooked backwards!!

I did find the fuses like you said chiefalen. One of them was blown, the other was good. I replaced both for about $3 from autozone. Didn't have a chance to check the voltage on the battery with the engine on yet, to check if the alternator got damaged. I will be doing that tomorrow as I also have to check the tilt mechanism. For which I will start another thread tomorrow. I also bought the Seloc book with reluctance... I'd have prefered the original factory book but I can't afford it now:(
thankyou all for the input.

Re: omc 2.5 battery hooked backwards!!

After I replaced the bad fuse The accessories work just fine but the engine now will not turn on. I teried a few times using starter fluid and cleaned the spark plug but it seems there is no spark. And the alternator felt a bit warm even if the engine never came on. So I dont know what else I fried if any..!!!

Re: omc 2.5 battery hooked backwards!!

It cranks but won't start correct?

Take a spark plug out and have someone crank the motor while you ground the tip of the plug, see a spark?

If no than check your points first.

They welded together?

Test to see if you have juice at the coil, ill post a thread how to trouble shoot this.

The alternator take it to Auto zone they will test it for you. For nothing.

If bad you will need a marine one, no short cuts with a auto one. Same with the starter.

Capice?
