About to rebuild carb, bought corresponding kit for # stamped on carb. Disassembled carb with step by step pics. I noticed some white deposits inside carb, possibly standing water from some point in its storied lifetime (its a 1977) and I was wondering what would be the best option to remove this calcium buildup. Should I use carb parts cleaner dip, CLR, Vinegar, Simple Green? I already cleaned all components with carb cleaner and a brush, just can’t get into all of the inaccessible areas. The carb worked when installed on the engine, it just didn’t want to start very well after shutting down. It also looked like it had been cleaned recently.
Thanks.

Makedust, the corrosion is what it is, first you may want to check float measurements, etc. And of course base adjustments. If it is clean you should be good...but you didn't hear that from me...

I used carb cleaner dip in a harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner then chase all passages with a stiff wire.

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and used white distilled vinegar and soaked the carb components that had crud on them for about three hours and it came out real good. The jets, power valve, Venturi, and power piston came out a lot cleaner than before. I chased all of the small holes with a small wire and cleaned the check ball seats and other hard to reach areas with q-tips and blew it all out with air compressor.
I’ve partially assembled the carb but I might have to go back and make sure I have the right check ball in the guide pump and see if I have the emulsion tubes, I didn’t see any when I disassembled so either they are there, it didn’t come with any, or they were left out after the previous rebuild. I will have to check.

remember, vinegar is an acid. acid eats the carb body.

Started right up on the first try, didn’t have to do any adjustments to the carb. Ran it for about an hour and shut it down and started up every 20 minutes, worked great. I was skeptical because I had not tried to start it up since the snow and freeze we had a few months ago. No cracks in the engine or anything like that, just a small water leak on the exhaust manifold but it did that last year too. I will have to order that gasket and I’ll probably replace the valve cover gasket as well as it shows signs of a small leak. All in all real happy with the carb kit.
