Am thinking about the purchase of a 1995 14' Boston Whaler Rage with an OMC 115 hp turbo jet. Any problems I should know about. Read some Whaler history about this engine not being too durable - any comments?

Welcome to iboats.
I've also heard bad things about the motor.
It was with the oil injection. But the boat is sweet!! If the price is right, I would get it, run the engine into junk, and repower that awesome huil.
JMHO

The boat is a bit heavy, and with the 115 it isn't the fastest around. You will not see 40mph, but the mid to upper 30's.

The V4 is bulletproof and with reasonable care lasts well over 1000 hours.

The biggest problem with all the sportjets is the running too shallow, or blasting the motor trying to back off a sandbar. The sand and shell sucked up into the motor clogs the cooling passages and overheats the engine.

Check yours to see if there is a large plastic filter bowl with screen on the port side to help strain the pebbles from getting into the engine. If not, get one from a dealer. It was an option.

So let's say I go ahead with the purchase (sea trial is next week) and run the current motor into the ground. What's a feasible replacement and associated costs to include labor?
The boat is pretty sweet. I like the hull design and lay out and the price is about $1000 under market retail. The trailer has new tires and bearings, but major rust on the wheel wells. We have a Proline 21 for light offshore, but it's a little too big for Indian River fishing and this boat offers a lot of versatility.

Seahorse5 is right on. 90% of all Turbo Jet failures I have seen were from overheat because the water passages were plugged with sand, mud, dirt ect.

Any late model V4 cross flow powerhead can be used as a replacement if needed.

Good luck!

Re: OMC 115 hp turbo jet

I own a 95 Boston Whaler Rage, 14 foot, with the 115 OMC TurboJet in it too. I have had extensive problems with overheating, and losing power consequently, and have blown 3 exhaust hoses due to overheating. I am in the process of replacing the water strainer mounted to the side of the engine compartment... Will this take care of my overheating problems? If not, what can I do to take care of this! I want my boat back! If anyone has any ideas, it would greatly appreciated!
-brett
